Sharing daily management experience for raising hedgehogs well

1) Do a good job of daily cleaning and hygiene work. The hedgehog's nest chamber must be cleaned frequently to keep it clean and hygienic. In summer, when the weather is hot, feed is prone to spoilage. The food dish fed the previous evening should be taken out the next morning, washed clean with clean water, and used again in the evening. It must not be left in the nest chamber all the time and then taken out for use at feeding time in the evening; in that way, the leftover food placed in the nest chamber for a day easily rots and spoils, and if the hedgehog eats such leftover food, it will suffer from gastrointestinal diseases. Clean, fresh drinking water should also often be placed in the outer chamber, and the water should be changed once every day; the bedding straw in the nest shed should also be changed frequently to maintain hygiene.

2) Do a good job of heat prevention and cold prevention work. If hedgehogs are raised in outdoor nest sheds, heat prevention in summer and cold prevention in winter must be achieved. Grapes should be planted in front of and behind each row of hedgehog sheds, and grape trellises should be set up above the nest sheds and exercise yards, letting the grape vines cover the trellises completely. In summer this can provide shade, and in autumn there is still a harvest. Within the 1-2 years before the grape trellises have formed, shade nets can be set up above each row of nest sheds in summer to prevent direct sunlight from shining on the nest sheds, raising the temperature inside the nest sheds and causing heatstroke. In winter, hedgehogs undergo false hibernation, and the suitable temperature for false hibernation is 0-8°C. In the Central Plains region, the lowest outdoor winter temperature is generally -10 to -6°C. If cold prevention work is not paid attention to, hedgehogs may freeze to death. Therefore, every winter, cold prevention work must be carried out for hedgehogs raised outdoors. The specific cold prevention measures are to bank up soil behind each row of nest sheds and cover the tops of the nest sheds with a thick layer of grass to help keep them warm. Before entering the hibernation period, the bedding straw inside the nest should be cleared out and replaced with more soft dry grass, so that the hibernating hedgehogs can burrow into the thick soft dry grass and safely overwinter.
