What are the key technical points for raising geese on pasture?

1. Pay attention to selecting good grass species. According to the digestive characteristics of geese, choose grass varieties suitable for raising geese. Pastures are divided into grasses (Poaceae) and legumes (Fabaceae), as well as amaranth family plants such as grain amaranth. For raising geese, it is suitable to plant grasses and amaranth family pasture, such as ryegrass, Rumex, and grain amaranth.

However, legume pasture becomes lignified in the later growth stage, with increased lignin, poor taste, and low digestibility.

2. Pay attention to matching the period when the pasture can be used with the time of introducing goslings. Avoid the situation where the pasture cannot yet be used after the goslings are introduced or hatched.

3. Pay attention to determining the pasture planting area according to the number of geese raised. According to the normal production performance of pasture, every 0.067 hectares can produce 0.5 -1.5  kilograms of fresh grass. For the fattening period of meat geese calculated at 80 days,  100-150 geese can be raised. However, in production practice, climate and field management levels all affect pasture yield. In addition, affected by the market price of meat geese, the slaughter time is also an uncertain factor. Therefore, in the production plan, arrangements can be made to raise 100 geese per 0.067 hectares of pasture.

4. Pay attention to supplementary feeding in the early and late fattening stages. Goslings have poor digestive function in the early stage and grow and develop rapidly, so they should be supplemented with easily digestible, nutritionally complete compound feed, and feeding pelleted feed gives better results. When supplementary feeding, follow the order of concentrated feed first and green feed second to prevent goslings from being picky about green feed. As the geese grow older, gradually increase the feeding of green fodder and reduce concentrated feed. At around 30 days of age, supplementary concentrated feed can be stopped, and pasture feeding can be the main diet. However, about 20 days before slaughter, concentrated feed should be supplemented to fatten the geese and increase economic benefits.

5. Pay attention to supplementing calcium and phosphorus. In the later growth stage of fattening geese, green fodder is mainly used, which easily causes calcium deficiency or an inappropriate calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Sick geese show symptoms of leg paralysis and paralysis. Therefore, pay attention to supplementing mineral feed for geese, such as feeding bone meal, shell powder, and calcium phosphate. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio should be maintained at 1.3:1. At the same time, supply enough vitamin D to promote the absorption of calcium and phosphorus by geese.
