Although it is not large in size, it is an expert at climbing mountains. Its growth rate is not particularly fast, but its meat quality is very good. It is the Wujin pig, a pig breed suitable for raising in high-altitude mountainous areas. Wujin pigs have a sturdy and robust constitution and are suitable for extensive rearing and management. At present, they are mainly distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan in China, and have become a good helper for many local farmers to become prosperous.

Wujin pigs have a straight back and loin, upright brown hair, a thick and long snout, and wrinkles and whorls of hair on the forehead, which indeed adds a somewhat fierce air to the Wujin pig. Most Wujin pigs are black, but a few are spotted. Under normal circumstances, Wujin pigs are marketed at 6 months of age, and the average body weight at marketing can reach 70 kg. When Wujin pigs are slaughtered at 70 kg body weight, the average dressing percentage can reach 75.86%. Farmers raising Wujin pigs should mainly focus on management to improve marketing efficiency in breeding.

In breeding, feed selection must be done well. In Wujin pig production, feed cost accounts for more than 70% of the total cost of pig raising. The level of pig-raising benefits depends to a large extent on how scientifically feed is selected. When using premix or concentrate, raw materials must be proportioned according to the formula, and random scooping and mixing must be avoided, so as to meet the nutritional needs of the pigs. Feed should be used according to the different physiological stages of pigs (suckling pigs, piglets, growing pigs, finishing pigs, boars and sows each have different feeding standards), otherwise it will cause feed waste or poor pig growth. Piglets should “grasp the three feeds” and “pass the three stages”. That is: grasp colostrum feeding to pass the growth stage well; grasp start feeding to pass the supplementary feeding stage well; grasp peak feeding to pass the weaning stage well. Piglets must not be fed too full, to prevent too much concentrate, otherwise it will cause diarrhea and induce edema disease. Do not change feed suddenly. The original feed and the new feed should be mixed and fed, gradually reducing the original feed and increasing the new feed, completing the feed change process over 5 to 7 days. Pig feed should not contain too much crude fiber. It should be matched with green and succulent feed to prevent a single feed from causing insufficient and incomplete nutrition. General farmers can plant high-yield forage grasses such as Zilixian grass, Ecao grass and Shanyie grass. Using high-quality forage grass to raise pigs can not only reduce feed costs, but also increase the lean meat percentage of pork, and can greatly improve the economic benefits of pig raising.

To make pigs reach marketing earlier, efforts should also be made in the following management aspects: First, do not let pigs drink cold water. Cold water should be boiled into warm water before being given to pigs. Second, winter temperatures are cold, so the stocking density can be appropriately increased. When stocking density is high, the floor area occupied by each pig is reduced, and they can warm each other by lying close together. At the same time, when pig stocking density is high, their body heat dissipation also increases, which helps raise the temperature inside the barn. 4. Increase the number of feedings. The purpose of increasing the number of feedings is to relatively increase feed intake, so as to fill the body weight deficit caused by low temperatures leading to heat production through fat and muscle metabolism in pigs. Where conditions permit, ad libitum feeding is best. Where feeding is done on a fixed schedule, one additional feeding can be added at night.

To do this breeding work well and improve marketing efficiency, epidemic prevention work is indispensable. There are many types of pig diseases and their causes are complex, but the first cause of pig death is still infectious diseases, especially swine fever, swine erysipelas, swine pasteurellosis, swine paratyphoid and colibacillosis. The principle of “disinfection first, prevention foremost, and combined prevention and treatment” should be adhered to. Pig farms should disinfect with pigs present at least once every 7 days and vaccinate in a timely manner. Once sick pigs are found, they should be immediately isolated and treated. Therefore, while paying attention to infectious diseases, farmers should also be alert to wasting diseases, because they will cause unnecessary losses to pig farmers, such as parasitic diseases, panting disease and mange. For newly introduced piglets, it is best to mix deworming medicine into the feed 8 to 10 days after entering the pen for deworming, and deworm once more when their body weight reaches 60 to 70 kg.
