What are the methods for determining the effectiveness of deworming in pigs?
Many pig farming friends are not clear on how to judge whether their pigs have a severe parasitic infection, or they only rely on visual observation. Here are two simple and very accurate methods for detecting parasitic infections and testing the effectiveness of deworming drugs, and we hope everyone can master them. To judge whether parasitic infection and deworming effectiveness in a pig farm are ideal, the rubbing-itch index method and the saturated saline flotation method are generally used.
1. Rubbing-itch index method. Used for detecting the infection degree of Sarcoptes scabiei on the body surface and testing the effect of killing Sarcoptes scabiei. The rubbing-itch index method refers to observing a group of pigs at rest (no fewer than 30 pigs), and dividing the total number of rubbing-itch actions within 15 minutes by the number of observed pigs. (That is, for 30 pigs, divide the total number of rubbing-itch actions within 15 minutes by 30 to get the rubbing-itch index.) 1. Severe infection: rubbing-itch index greater than 0.4. 2. Moderate infection: rubbing-itch index 0.1—0.4. 3. Mild infection: rubbing-itch index less than 0.1. Note: If the rubbing-itch index decreases significantly after the pig farm uses deworming drugs for 7 days, it proves that the deworming effect is obvious. 2. Saturated saline flotation method, used for detecting the infection degree of internal Ascaris, thorny-headed worms, Oesophagostomum, lungworms, pig kidney worms, etc., and for testing deworming effectiveness. 1. Severe infection: the number of eggs in one gram of pig feces is greater than 5000. 2. Moderate infection: the number of eggs in one gram of pig feces is 500—5000. 3. Mild infection: the number of eggs in one gram of pig feces is less than 500. Regardless of internal parasites or external parasites, deworming must be carried out for moderate infection or above. Note: Before the pig farm uses deworming drugs, if the detected egg count exceeds 500 per gram, and after using the deworming drugs no adult worms are seen being expelled, and upon retesting the eggs the number drops significantly, it proves that deworming is effective. Preparation of saturated saline: put clean water in a container, bring it to a boil, then slowly add table salt while stirring constantly until the salt no longer dissolves. The liquid after cooling is saturated saline. About 35-40 g of table salt is added to 100 ml of boiling water.
