In our country, if live pigs develop diseases such as explosive diarrhea or cross-infection, most are injected with antibiotics to fight the disease, and antibiotic residues in pork have become a considerable health hazard for consumers. At present, antibiotic-free farming technology has been developed at home and abroad, using microbial preparations to replace antibiotics, by increasing the number of probiotics in the pig intestine to compete with pathogenic bacteria, while producing antibacterial substances to reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria and lower the infection rate.

The team of Associate Professor Chen Zhengjun at the State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology of Huazhong Agricultural University adopted high-density lactic acid bacteria fermentation technology to reduce costs. This kind of “medicinal” yogurt costs no more than 50 yuan per liter. A small pig weighing 20 to 30 kg needs only a dose of 0.5 ml-1 ml to achieve the disease-resistance purpose. Therefore, on average, a pig needs only about 5 fen in cost, which is nearly a hundred times cheaper than the normal vaccine at 3 to 5 yuan per dose.

Last October, pigs at a pig farm in Jiangxia District suddenly developed diarrheal disease. The laboratory sent 2 liters of the finished vaccine, and the epidemic among 300 pigs was quickly and effectively controlled. Chen Zhengjun said that this vaccine will undergo larger-scale experiments this year and will be promoted.
