How to Keep a Cockatiel? Detailed Guide to Care Methods and Precautions
The cockatiel is a relatively quiet bird. It is mainly distributed throughout Australia except Tasmania. Many people like to keep parrots because parrots can learn to talk like humans. Especially for many older people whose children are not around them most of the time, keeping a parrot can provide entertainment. So let us take a look at how to keep a parrot, shall we?
How to keep a cockatiel?
1. Parrot droppings and feathers are a breeding ground for bacteria in a warm and humid home environment. To ensure the health of the parrot and the family, the cage, perches and other items the parrot comes into contact with must be cleaned and disinfected regularly. When the parrot plays in areas where the family often moves around (such as the floor, sofa and bed), use newspaper, plastic bags or cloth pieces as a lining to prevent contamination by the parrot's droppings and debris.
2. Food poisoning and digestive system diseases are common illnesses in parrots, mainly caused by accidentally eating unclean food. The proactive approach is to prevent parrots from accidentally eating unsuitable things in all situations.
3. The way parrot food is prepared should differ from the cooking methods we are used to. Do not add oil or various seasonings, and cooked food must be cooled to room temperature before being fed to the bird. Some parrots develop diarrhea after eating cooked food. The cause can be sought in several aspects: the food was not cooked through, especially fish, meat, eggs and other animal-based ingredients; some food was stored in the refrigerator and fed to the parrot without being thawed after taking it out; some foods are not suitable to be cooked but were cooked and then fed to the parrot.
4. Fruits and vegetables are best fed raw, but before feeding they must first be washed and disinfected. For disinfecting food, do not use ordinary household detergents and disinfectants. You can put cold water in a clean basin, add a few spoonfuls of refined salt and a little lemon juice to make a soaking solution. Soak fruits and vegetables in it for 5-10 minutes, and leafy vegetables for about 3 minutes, then take them out and rinse them clean under running tap water.
5. Unsuitable indoor temperatures can weaken a parrot's constitution and lower its immunity, and in severe cases can even cause the parrot's death.
6. The way to groom a parrot is to clip its feathers. Feather clipping is the most direct and effective way to protect a parrot, preventing young parrots from flying away, as well as the dangers and injuries that flight may bring (for example, hitting a wall or glass, or starving to death after flying away, or encountering animals, etc.).
7. Parrots are actually very afraid of heat, and heat harms parrots far more than cold. When the ambient temperature exceeds 35°C, most parrots become restless and agitated; when it exceeds 37°C, individual parrots with poor constitutions may die because of central nervous paralysis.
8. Training a parrot is essential. Give a fixed amount of food at a fixed time, and this amount of food should be much less than the previous amount, so that the parrot learns and understands that the food at this time is only this much. If it spills the food, it has to wait until the next meal. Gradually it will value the food more and change its behavior. This requires the cooperation of the whole family. If the parrot has a very bad temper, it is recommended not to reduce the amount too much all at once; it is better to proceed gradually, or choose a feed bowl with an inward-curved opening.
Can cockatiels talk?
Cockatiels can talk, but their ability to whistle is stronger than their ability to speak, and they can learn many tones. If you can start training a cockatiel when it is still young, it will be easier. You can probably start when the cockatiel is ten to fourteen weeks old, and the results are usually good. However, if your cockatiel is already over six months old, training may be more difficult. A male cockatiel's ability to learn speech is much stronger than that of a female cockatiel, and therefore they are more able to learn to talk.
The price of cockatiels
The price of an ordinary cockatiel is generally 100-150 RMB. If it is excellent at whistling tunes and the shop owner likes it, it may sell for 300 yuan. There are also some such as the original species, white-faced, black-cock, cinnamon, and copper-wing types that are more expensive. For white-faced ones, the ordinary type is generally around 60 yuan, and there is also a kind of yellow pearl mutation that may sell for around 260.
What varieties of cockatiels are there?
1. The gray cockatiel has body feathers that are blue-gray, a pale yellow crest on the head, a black-gray beak, and the top of the head, forehead, lower chin to throat are all pale yellow. It has orange-yellow round patches on the cheeks, the upper body, chest and abdomen are blue-gray, the outer coverts of both wings are white (some also have white patches on the back and wings), and the tail feathers are black-gray, with the central tail feathers especially long.
