What grass is good to feed sheep raised in pens? How much profit is there?
At present, there are a great many people in our country raising sheep, and there are also many methods for raising sheep, among which the half-pen method is the most common. However, many people do not know what sheep should eat when raising them in pens. The profit of pen-raised sheep is also something many people who want to raise them are quite concerned about. Let us take a look below!
What grass to feed pen-raised sheep
1. Alfalfa (purple-flowered alfalfa). It is cultivated or in a semi-wild state throughout the country. It grows at field edges, roadsides, open fields, grasslands, riverbanks and gullies. It is widely planted as feed and forage grass in Eurasia and countries around the world.
2. Ryegrass. It is a plant of the grass family, genus Lolium, with about 10 species, including forage and pasture grasses of the temperate regions of Eurasia and some poisonous weeds. Ryegrass is an important cultivated forage grass and green manure crop.
3. Sudangrass hybrid (Gaodan grass). Sudangrass hybrid combines the advantages of sorghum's thick stems and wide leaves with Sudan grass's strong tillering ability and regrowth ability, and its heterosis is very obvious. The hay contains crude protein and has a relatively high sugar content, is suitable for silage, and can be used to raise cattle, sheep, rabbits, geese, fish and other livestock and poultry, showing high quality and high yield in production with obvious benefits.
Profit of pen-raised sheep
Take the most common pen-raised small-tailed sheep as an example:
1. A purebred Small-tailed Han sheep ewe at 5-6 months of age costs about 800 yuan. After fattening for 2 months of age it can be bred. The feed cost of raising one ewe is about 350 yuan/year. Calculated at 3 lambs per year, a lamb raised to 3 months of age can be sold for about 500 yuan, so 3 lambs are 1500 yuan. Calculated at 3 litters in 2 years, 9 lambs can be reached. The cost of raising the ewe for two years is 700 yuan, and the profit from 9 lambs is 4500 yuan. (The condition is that under the situation of fattening to 3 months of age and selling, the cost of raising a lamb is 150.) 9 lambs are 1350 yuan, and 4500-700-1350=2450 yuan. Raising 100 basic ewes for 2 years can yield a profit of 245000 yuan. The breeding benefit is still quite considerable.
2. Purchase 100 Small-tailed Han sheep fattening lambs. The cost of lambs at 3-4 months of age is 500 yuan/head. After short-term fattening to 5-6 months of age, the mutton sheep reach 150 jin, and calculated at 10 yuan/jin they can be sold for 1500 yuan. After deducting feed cost of 400 yuan and labor and water and electricity of 100 yuan, raising 100 Small-tailed Han sheep for half a year can earn a profit margin of 50000 yuan.
Feed formulas for pen-raised sheep

3. Breeding ewe formula: corn 47%, wheat bran 17%, soybean meal 13%, sunflower cake 19%, tricalcium phosphate 3%, salt 0.9%, additives 0.1%.
4. Breeding ram formula: corn 54%, wheat bran 5%, soybean meal 22%, sunflower cake 15%, tricalcium phosphate 3%, salt 0.9%, additives 0.1%.
5. Fattening sheep formula: corn 61%, wheat bran 15%, soybean meal 10%, sunflower cake 10%, tricalcium phosphate 3%, salt 0.9%, additives 0.1%.
Common epidemic diseases of sheep and their prevention and treatment
1. Anthrax. To prevent sheep anthrax, relevant immune vaccines can be injected. In areas where the disease has occurred, prevention efforts should be increased, with 1 injection each year. After an outbreak of sheep anthrax is found, sick sheep should be isolated and treated promptly. The breeding farm should also be strictly locked down, and dead sheep should be disposed of by burning or deep burial. Thoroughly clean the sanitation of the pens, sweep away all manure, replace bedding grass, etc., and use drugs for disinfection. Sick sheep can be treated by injecting penicillin, and anthrax serum can be chosen for treatment depending on the situation. When using drugs for treatment, attention should be paid to the relevant requirements for medication.
2. Enterotoxemia. Scientifically manage feed and ensure the hygiene of the feed. Water sources must be strictly monitored to ensure the health of the water source. Improve the scientific management of the breeding farm and pay attention to the dryness of the pens. Sick sheep found with enterotoxemia should be isolated promptly and treated with drugs promptly. The drugs can be antiserum and antitoxin.
The common forage grasses for pen-raised sheep are ryegrass, Sudangrass hybrid, etc., and everyone can choose them. As long as sheep are raised well in pens, the profit is still quite good. There are many formulas for feeding, and the formulas are different at different stages. Detailed introductions are given above, and I hope they can be helpful to everyone.
