A Detailed Guide to Freshwater Oriental River Prawn Farming Techniques and Postlarval Breeding Techniques
The oriental river prawn is a type of freshwater prawn, and its nutritional value is very high. The freshwater oriental river prawn grows very quickly, and individuals are larger than ordinary prawns. The freshwater oriental river prawn reproduces quickly and has strong vitality. The freshwater oriental river prawn mainly lives in the freshwater lakes of China. Oriental river prawns taste very good and are rich in nutrients, so more and more people will buy freshwater oriental river prawns.
Freshwater Oriental River Prawn Farming Techniques
1. Pond conditions: abundant water source, fresh water quality, no pollution, convenient water intake and drainage, an area of 2000—3000 sq m is suitable, with a water depth of 1—1.5 m. High-yield prawn ponds should be equipped with aerators, and some submerged plants should be planted appropriately in the pond, generally not exceeding 1/4 of the pond area.
2. Pond disinfection: common disinfectants include quicklime, bleaching powder, croton, etc. After the medicine has completely disappeared, prawns can be stocked for farming. Water filling and fertilizing: 1 week before stocking the postlarvae, fill with water to 0.5 m, then fertilize according to whether the pond water is rich or lean, in order to increase the palatable feed for young prawns, namely plankton.
3. Postlarval stocking: When oriental river prawns are farmed in the south, two crops can be farmed in 1 year; in the north, generally 1 crop is farmed in 1 year. For 1 crop per year, the stocking time is May—June, with 2—3 kg of berried prawns stocked per 667 sq m, or 100,000—150,000 postlarvae, and the yield can reach 100 kg.
4. Feeding: The oriental river prawn is an omnivorous animal with a broad diet, but it is also selective. Among plant-based feeds, it prefers soybean cake, peanut cake, wheat bran, and rice bran; among animal-based feeds, it prefers earthworms, snails and clams, small miscellaneous fish and prawns, fish meal, flour, silkworm pupae, and so on.
Freshwater Oriental River Prawn Postlarval Breeding Techniques
1. For the physical environment, there must be water lettuce on the water surface (accounting for 1/3), and it is best to have aquatic plants at the bottom, along with concealed caves, to increase attachment sites for postlarval molting and also to make it convenient to wash the postlarvae through the water lettuce and inspect them, so as to grasp the emergence time and the growth condition of the prawns.
2. Add fences and filter nets at the water inlet to prevent harmful organisms from entering the pond, and at the same time prevent frogs from entering the pond to lay eggs, avoiding tadpoles eating the postlarvae. At the same time, prevent parent prawns from climbing and escaping.
3. Strengthen inspection. Persist in checking the emergence situation morning and evening. When the postlarvae swim away from the mother, promptly catch the parent prawns and return them to the parent prawn pond for further rearing, minimizing counting and transferring between ponds, and handle them with special care to avoid affecting the berried parent prawns and the newly hatched postlarvae.
4. Ensure feed supply. Timely cultivate small zooplankton such as rotifers for the newly hatched postlarvae to feed on. An estimated 3-5 days before emergence, begin catching a small amount of small zooplankton from a dedicated feed pond and putting them into the postlarval pond.
What Kind of Prawn Is the Oriental River Prawn
1. The scientific name of the oriental river prawn is Macrobrachium, mainly distributed in the freshwater waters of China and Japan, with advantages such as high fecundity, strong adaptability, a wide diet, and delicious meat.
2. The oriental river prawn is one of the freshwater prawns in the animal kingdom, phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Crustacea, class Crustacea, order Decapoda, family Palaemonidae. It grows quickly, has a large individual size, reproduces quickly, and has strong vitality, and is widely distributed in the freshwater lakes of China. During the day it hides in dark places, and at night it is active, often climbing and crawling on the bottom, aquatic plants, and other objects.
3. It is an omnivorous aquatic animal, preferring animal-based feed. The most suitable growth water temperature is 18-30℃. When the water temperature drops to 4℃, it enters the overwintering period, and when the water temperature rises above 10℃, its vitality strengthens. It likes to inhabit slow-flowing places where aquatic plants grow thickly, and the inhabiting water depth ranges from 1-2 m to 6-7 m. It is photophobic, hiding in dark places during the day and coming out to activity at night.
What Is the Difference Between White Shrimp and Oriental River Prawn
1. Sea prawns mainly use white shrimp as the main variety, while river prawns mainly use Macrobrachium as the main variety. They all belong to the family Palaemonidae, and their appearance is very similar, but their taste and texture differ considerably, so their market prices also differ greatly.
2. White shrimp, also known as Huangxia, Jiangtu, and Yingchun shrimp, has its whole body covered with a carapace, with the second abdominal segment shell covering the outside of the first abdominal segment shell. It has two relatively short thin whiskers, and its body is white and transparent, with slight blue or red small spots. The outer shell is very thin but relatively hard, and the prawn body is slightly laterally compressed, with the shell ridge slightly forming an edge.
