Every hot summer, although people dislike this kind of high-temperature environment, the seasonal delicacies are still very alluring. Crayfish is a very delicious food and is increasingly favored by consumers on the market; at present, its farming prospects are relatively promising. However, quite a few farmers report that shrimp die easily. Could there be a problem in the farming process?

How to raise shrimp so they won't die

1. Choosing a pond: For crayfish farming, the water source must be fresh, with sufficient dissolved oxygen and no pollution. The pond embankment should be more than 3 m wide, and the pond area should not be too large, generally 3-8 mu is suitable. It is worth noting that crayfish have a strong escape ability, so escape-prevention facilities must be properly built.

2. Pond clearing and disinfection: Clearing and disinfecting the pond can effectively kill harmful organisms in the pond (catfish, loach, snakehead, snakes, rats, etc.), wild and miscellaneous fish that compete for food (carp, crucian carp, etc.), and pathogens. Quicklime and bleaching powder can be used; they are economical, affordable and safe.

3. Planting aquatic plants: Aquatic plants play a decisive role in crayfish farming. Generally, they should cover half of the pond area. Low-stem reeds, wild rice stem, Elodea, Hydrilla and so on can be chosen. If conditions permit, some empty cans, bamboo tubes, tree roots, etc. can also be placed at the bottom.

4. Stocking crayfish: Crayfish seedling stocking is divided into spring stocking and autumn stocking. The seedlings are required to be uniform in size, with complete appendages, free of disease and injury, and stocked sufficiently in one go. Before stocking, bathe them in 5% salt water for 5-10 minutes to kill parasites and pathogenic bacteria.

5. Feeding: Crayfish mostly move and forage at night. Feed once each at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day. The afternoon feeding amount accounts for about 70% of the whole day's feeding amount. The daily feeding amount can be appropriately increased or decreased according to the weather, water quality conditions and the shrimp's activity and foraging situation.

6. Daily management: In crayfish farming, the pond should be patrolled every day, paying attention to changes in water color and crayfish activity. If shrimp are found on the bank or climbing on aquatic plants and refuse to enter the water when driven, check whether the water body is short of oxygen or the water quality has deteriorated, and take corresponding measures such as increasing oxygen and changing the water.

What water to use for raising shrimp

1. Various water quality indicators for shrimp ponds are: pH between 8 and 8.6; water color brown, brownish or green; transparency 30-1000px; dissolved oxygen above 4 mg/l; ammonia nitrogen less than 0.1 mg/l; nitrite less than 0.05 mg/l. Add water in the early stage, and change water appropriately in the middle and late stages according to water quality conditions. Regularly use microecological preparations to regulate water quality so that it remains good.

2. Saturated dissolved oxygen in the pond can increase the growth rate of shrimp. When dissolved oxygen in the pond is saturated, the water body's purification capacity is strong and the water quality is stable. When shrimp live in a stable water quality environment, they have a good appetite, a large food intake, good digestion, high utilization rate and thus grow relatively fast. This is also why in some ponds with well-regulated water quality, shrimp tend to grow large easily.

Prevention and treatment methods for crayfish black gill disease

I. Causes of black gill disease

Crayfish black gill disease is caused by deterioration and pollution of water quality, which prompts Fusarium to multiply in large numbers and parasitize the gill filaments, body wall, bases of appendages or eyeballs of crayfish.

II. Symptoms of black gill disease

The gills of crayfish first change from slightly red to brown or light brown, and then gradually turn black, causing gill atrophy and gradual degradation of function. Affected shrimp often float to the surface or cling to aquatic plants and appear out of the water, move slowly and sluggishly, and finally die of breathing difficulty.

III. Prevention and treatment of black gill disease

1. Before stocking seedlings, thoroughly clear the pond with quicklime, etc.

2. Ensure the pond water is fresh and dissolved oxygen is sufficient, and promptly remove leftover bait and debris from the pond.

3. Splash potassium permanganate over the whole pond at a concentration of 0.2-0.3 mg/l for disinfection.

4. During the disease outbreak, splashing bleaching powder at a concentration of 1 mg/l or methylene blue at a concentration of 7 mg/l over the whole pond has a certain curative effect.

What advantages are there in raising crayfish

1. Large market potential: The market demand for crayfish is very large. This tight market supply-demand relationship gives the crayfish industry relatively high economic benefits and broad development prospects, so sales are not a problem.

2. Low farming difficulty: Crayfish have strong adaptability to the environment, few diseases, and tolerance to low oxygen. They can be raised not only in small water bodies with high density in ponds, but can also naturally reproduce in various water bodies such as rivers, ditches, lakes, rice fields and swamps. The farming technique is simple and convenient.

3. Low farming cost: Crayfish are omnivorous, and bait is easy to obtain. At low density, no special feed is needed. They grow relatively fast, have high yield, high energy conversion rate, low farming cost and good benefits.

4. Short farming cycle: Crayfish can generally be marketed after about 2 months of growth. Through the technical plan of catching the large and leaving the small, a cyclic farming method can be adopted. It belongs to a farming model of one-time stocking and year-round benefits.

Raising crayfish has relatively strict requirements for water quality. Shrimp grow relatively fast when living in a stable water quality environment. At present, market demand for shrimp is increasing, and the farming prospects are very promising. Friends with farming experience can consider it.
