The alligator snapping turtle is a species of turtle. Compared with ordinary turtles, its appearance has some differences: its shell looks just like an alligator's shell, which is how it got its name. Today the alligator snapping turtle is also deeply loved by people, and many want to raise it. But before raising one, everyone wants a comprehensive understanding of its farming techniques.

How to Raise an Alligator Snapping Turtle So It Grows Fast

1. Raising hatchling alligator snapping turtles: For newly hatched hatchlings, wait until the umbilical cord has closed, then disinfect with 10% saline solution and place them in a container with a water temperature of 25-30. Change the water 3 times a day. After 3 days, they can be fed a mixture of cooked eggs and cooked millet. After about 50 days, feed them chopped small fish, snails, mussel meat, animal offal and scraps. After 90 days, they can be transferred to a cement pond for rearing.

2. Raising adult alligator snapping turtles: The feed for adult turtles is still mainly small fish, snails, mussel meat, animal offal and scraps, supplemented with some softened wheat, crushed corn, vegetables, aquatic plants, etc. Vitamins, trace elements and calcium should also be added appropriately. Feed at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day. In spring and autumn, change the water once every 7 days; in summer, change the water once every 3 days. After late October, they enter the hibernation period.

Farming Techniques for the Alligator Snapping Turtle

1. Pond construction: Choose a site with a convenient water source, no pollution, and convenient transportation but quiet for building the pond. The shape should preferably be an east-west rectangular cement-faced pond with rounded corners, or an earthen pond of the same shape but with an anti-escape wall built outside. The area of each pond ranges from several dozen sq m to several hundred sq m.

2. Feed feeding: It is recommended to use SDG alligator snapping turtle special green compound feed (protein content above 48%). When preparing, weigh the ingredients on site, add photosynthetic bacteria at 5%-10% of the total weight of the ingredients and about 45% clean water, and make long pellets with a particle size of 2 mm-3 mm. If conditions permit, making floating extruded pellet feed gives even better results.

3. Water quality regulation: Given the conditions of high-density intensive turtle farming, the turtle's food intake and excrement are both relatively large, and the water temperature is relatively high. Even if the feed given is green feed, it still fouls the water quality fairly quickly, and more harmful substances are easily produced in the water body, especially H2S, which is quite harmful. Splashing and bottom-applying photosynthetic bacteria can effectively improve water quality and reduce harmful substances. Each time new pond water is added, apply 10×10-6-15×10-6 photosynthetic bacteria at the same time.

4. Water temperature control: Scientific regulation of water temperature directly affects the weight gain and survival rate of adult turtle farming. If the alligator snapping turtle is kept at 18°C-20°C for a long time, its growth rate is several times slower than at the optimal growth water temperature of 30°C-31°C. Therefore, the water temperature for raising turtles must be kept within 30°C-31°C. On the other hand, when a turtle pond is having its water changed or is exposed to the outside and happens to encounter severe weather such as heavy rain or a sudden temperature change, precautions should be taken in time, and water temperature fluctuations greater than 2°C should be avoided as much as possible.

Feeding Tips for the Alligator Snapping Turtle

1. Turtles eat in the water, so when feeding, you can just put the feed directly into the water. Turtles are generally fed pork, beef, small shrimp, small fish, and the livers of poultry and fish. These foods need to be chopped or torn into pieces, but these animal-based feeds very easily pollute the water quality, so it is recommended to take the turtle out to feed it.

2. Beginners are advised to feed compound feed. Feed is more hassle-free, and professional turtle feed has a better nutritional balance and does not easily pollute the water quality. In summer, when the temperature is high, the turtle's metabolism is fast, so it can be fed once a day, but it is generally recommended to feed once every two to three days. Turtles do not need to be fed too frequently; they are animals with very slow metabolism. It is fine to feed them once every few days, and as long as a sufficient water supply is guaranteed, it is no problem for them not to eat for half a month. The amount fed each time is generally enough if it is about the size of their head.

What to Do If the Alligator Snapping Turtle Gets Pneumonia

Use 1 capsule of amoxicillin per day. Melt the amoxicillin powder in boiling water, then dilute it in about 1 liter of water. Just let the turtle soak in it, and do not pour out the medicated water. Mix the next day's medicine with this as well, and keep accumulating it. Change the medicated water once every 3-4 days, until the turtle's symptoms subside and it resumes eating. Under the mediation of the medicine, if your turtle still has not improved, then play some music for it while giving it medicine.

As long as the farming techniques are appropriate, alligator snapping turtles will grow well and quickly. First, pay attention to regulating water quality, and then controlling water temperature is also very important. Reasonable feeding is the most important step to ensure its growth, and disease prevention and control also need to be carried out in a timely manner. Only by doing these things well can the alligator snapping turtle grow up healthily.
