What Do Toads Eat? A Detailed Guide to Toad Farming Techniques
We all know that the medicinal value of toads is very high, so the market demand for toads is also very high, and many people have joined the ranks of raising toads, since the market prospects for toads are still promising. So today, I will mainly teach you some small techniques for raising toads, including what we should pay attention to when farming them?
What Do Toads Eat
1. When young, a toad takes the form of a tadpole. They generally eat plankton in the water. Such as: mosquito larvae, plankton, fish worms and so on.
2. Most tadpoles make a living by scraping algae with rows of keratinized teeth in their mouths, but if there happen to be some small animal carcasses such as earthworms or beetles in the water, they will also feed on them in groups.
3. When food is insufficient, the phenomenon of cannibalism, with large tadpoles eating small tadpoles, can also occur.
Toad Farming Techniques
1. Stocking methods
Using abandoned ditches and ponds, riverside flats, and courtyard vegetable gardens, captured adult toads can be kept in pens. According to the scope of the enclosure, use 30 cm long reeds or bamboo strips and bamboo branches, spaced at equal distances of 3 cm, to enclose the surroundings, and tie them firmly with straw rope; a 15 cm high wall can also be built to prevent the toads from escaping. Pond pens should also be connected to part of the dry land, to make it convenient to light lamps to lure insects and to catch and scrape the venom. Raising toads in courtyard vegetable gardens is mainly about keeping toads whose venom has been scraped during the summer and autumn seasons, so as to continue scraping the venom. Scrape the venom once every two weeks. When keeping them in pens by ponds and river beaches, it is best to use black light lamps to lure insects to feed the toads; 1 black light lamp can lure and catch more than 100,000 small insects in one night. Field stocking is mainly in cotton fields; 1 mu can stock 100—500 toads whose venom has already been scraped once. Stocking toads in cotton fields can both play a role in pest control and allow a second scraping of venom after two weeks.
2. Breeding management
Capture breeding toads, and choose toads that are large in size, well developed, robust, and free of disease and injury to raise; stock 1—2 pairs of breeding toads per sq m. Collect egg masses as seed and place them in paddy fields or breeding ponds for artificial hatching. During hatching, keep the water temperature at 10—30C, with 18—24E being most suitable, and adjust the water depth at any time; after 3—4 days, small tadpoles can be hatched. If there is bad weather such as cold waves or heavy rain, plastic film can be used for covering to keep them warm.
Methods for Preventing Gastroenteritis in Toad Farming
1. Causes of gastroenteritis in toad farming: spoiled and deteriorated bait, and deterioration of the habitat environment. It mostly occurs at the turn of spring and summer and at the turn of summer and autumn.
2. Symptoms of gastroenteritis in toad farming: in the early stage, sick toads are restless and crawl around, and like to burrow into mud; in the later stage, they often lie by the pond, stretch their legs, close their eyes, do not eat or move, react slowly, and are not afraid of disturbance; after being caught, they struggle very little and often retract their heads and arch their backs.
3. Prevention of gastroenteritis in toad farming: do a good job in feeding and management, do not feed moldy bait, and keep the bait table and pond water clean and hygienic.
4. Treatment of gastroenteritis in toad farming: mix into food and feed yeast tablets 2 times a day, each time mixing half a tablet into every kilogram of bait, and feed continuously for 3 to 5 days; disinfect the sick toad pond by splashing with bleaching powder solution.
Toad Farming Management Techniques
1. A toad farm should be established close to a water source, with grass around it, and ponds, ditches, or field ridges can be used as breeding ponds. A wall should be built around the site, and lawn and vegetable plots should be left inside the wall for toads to rest and move about. Aquatic plants should grow in the pond, and sparse planting is suitable. In addition, they can also be raised in a free-range way in cotton fields and rice fields.
2. Toad tadpoles begin to eat food within 2 to 3 days after hatching, first feeding on the egg membrane, and afterward eating some plant debris, microorganisms in the water, and plankton. The food of tadpoles includes humus, pig and cattle manure, bran, vegetables, tender grass, fish and livestock and poultry, and raw and cooked waste, etc. After the tadpoles metamorphose into young frogs, they feed on live bait. Various insects such as earthworms and fly maggots can be cultivated, and insect-attracting lamps can also be used to lure various insects for the toads to eat.
3. The water depth of the tadpole pond should be kept at 0.2 to 0.4 m deep, and attention should be paid to draining water in time. A water temperature of 16 to 28°C is the most suitable temperature for growth and development. As the tadpoles grow larger, attention should be paid to dividing them into ponds in time; generally after 2 months they begin to metamorphose into young frogs. When raising young frogs, attention should be paid to not making the density too high; it is suitable to stock 30 to 50 per 1 sq m.
4. Prevent escape and harm from natural enemies. When the sunlight is strong, water can be sprayed to prevent the skin from drying out. At the end of autumn, prepare overwintering sites for the toads; dry grass can be piled in the corners of the breeding pond to let them overwinter. In the cold north, an overwintering greenhouse or a deep overwintering pond can be built separately, and the pond water should preferably be 1 times larger than the freezing layer.
In the article above, I have also explained some mature farming techniques for everyone. In fact, toads are still relatively easy to farm. And the effects of toads are: detoxification, reducing swelling, relieving pain, strengthening the heart and promoting urination, anti-cancer, anesthesia, and anti-radiation. These effects also have very great benefits for people.
