Along with the huge popularity of Douyin short videos and Huoshan short videos, some of the small animals featured in them have also become very popular among people. Nowadays pufferfish appear in people's sight more and more often, and many people like this little guy that puffs up its belly when it gets angry. Many people want to keep a pufferfish, so are pufferfish really easy to keep? What farming techniques are there for pufferfish? Next, let's learn about it together.

Are pufferfish easy to keep

Pufferfish are not easy to keep. In the wild they can grow to 17CM, but in an aquarium they usually do not grow that large, and those sold on the market are mostly around 5CM. They are a very popular tetraodontid ornamental fish among today's tropical ornamental fish; the juveniles are non-toxic (about 3cm or so), while the adults are toxic. Water quality requirements: high-hardness water at PH 8.O; suitable water temperature: 24-28 degrees Celsius.

What pufferfish eat

Pufferfish have omnivorous feeding habits, often feeding on fish, shrimp, crabs and shellfish, and also eating insect larvae, cladocerans, copepods, as well as the leaves of higher plants and filamentous algae. During the fry stage, pufferfish are all fed with mysid shrimp, shrimp, sand lance and the like; during the grow-out stage, besides sardines, mackerel and sand lance, fish such as spotted fish, greenling, saury and horse mackerel can also be used, and in order to improve the quality of the fish meat at harvest, squid, shrimp, oysters, hard clams and the like are sometimes also fed.

Pufferfish farming techniques

1. Before releasing the fry, select seedlings of uniform size that are healthy and lively, and at the same time understand the management conditions during the seedling stage and whether there are deformed seedlings, etc.

2. Before the seedlings are stocked, a medicated bath must be carried out to prevent the invasion of parasites and other diseases. When moving and transporting seedlings, large containers should be used as much as possible to avoid injuring the fingerlings and fry.

3. The best way to prevent cannibalism is to produce and use healthy seedlings. Healthy seedlings show schooling activity in cages and breeding ponds, and under such conditions cannibalism is unlikely to occur.

4. Usually from May to November, sorting must be done twice; when changing the net, it is best to let the old and new nets connect together so that the fish move over naturally and the fish bodies are not scraped.

5. Fresh chilled bait is best processed with ice, keeping the bait as fresh as possible and preventing protein from spoiling. Feeding of fresh bait should begin in the early morning to increase the fry's enthusiasm for taking the bait.

Measures to prevent white mouth disease in pufferfish

1. Stock healthy seedlings that do not carry pathogens. Use water sources free of viral contamination; for suspicious water sources, disinfect with 0.5-1.0g of bleaching powder per cubic meter of water, and use it after 24-36 hours.

2. The stocking density should be appropriate, and bait should be fed in appropriate and even amounts to avoid mutual biting due to lack of food; promptly remove sick and dead fish and thoroughly destroy them, isolate ponds where disease has broken out, and prohibit the cross-use of farming tools.

In the above text, we have gained some understanding of some of the farming techniques for pufferfish. But you must remember that pufferfish cannot be eaten. Yet such a cute little guy, even if it cannot be eaten by people, will surely still be kept by many people.
