What conditions are needed for bullfrog farming, and what are the risks?

The bullfrog is an amphibian that is fairly common in daily life. It gets its name because its call sounds very much like the lowing of a cow, and the bullfrog is also relatively large in size, belonging to the large edible frogs. It not only has a certain food value but can also be used medicinally, so it can be said to have a wide range of uses.

So do you know what requirements there are for farming bullfrogs? Is there any risk in farming bullfrogs?

Bullfrog farming conditions

Bullfrog pond farming requires an adequate water source, convenient drainage and irrigation, unpolluted water quality, a quiet environment, convenient transportation and an adequate power supply. Usually every 100 sq m forms one large pond, and each large pond is evenly divided into four small ponds. The pond edges are enclosed with 40-mesh bolting silk, with the bolting silk standing about 1 m above the pond bottom, the bottom 20 to 30 cm of the bolting silk buried in the soil, the pond ridge 40 cm high, the pond slope ratio 1:3, the water level 30 to 40 cm, and the water depth not less than 20 cm. The inlet and outlet are set at opposite corners of the large pond. Four 80 cm × 40 cm foam plastic boards are placed in each pond as resting platforms for the bullfrogs, and black shade netting is used for shade.

What risks are there in bullfrog farming

1. Failure to consider the sales market: because of high output but low local sales, finished products pile up unsold. After grow-out, at a relatively low yield of 5,000 jin per mu in our county, output can reach 1,500 tons.

2. Poor farming technology and high stocking density lead to a relatively high mortality rate, and in some cases total loss. For example, a farm in Lanxi Town shut down in the first half of the year.

3. Non-standard farming: in pursuit of high yield, antibiotics and other additives are continuously used in large doses during the farming process, creating product quality and safety problems.

4. Bullfrog farming is a highly polluting industry, and harmless treatment capacity has not kept up. If it causes relatively serious environmental pollution, the farm will be forcibly closed by the relevant authorities.

5. Polluting farmland and making it difficult to return to cultivation. In farmland where bullfrogs have been farmed for 3 to 5 years, the soil salinity and alkalinity are high, making it hard to return to cultivation. Although farming bullfrogs can make fishermen in an area wealthy, the risks brought by bullfrog farming should not be underestimated. Farmers are urged to think carefully.

Bullfrog farming prospects

Medicinal prospects of bullfrog farming: frog meat is neutral in nature and sweet in taste, while the gall bladder is cold in nature. It treats many human diseases, such as edema and throat erosion, and has the effects of invigorating blood and reducing accumulations, clearing heat and detoxifying, tonifying deficiency and relieving cough.

Leather prospects of bullfrog farming: bullfrog skin is firm, thick, soft, smooth and elastic, and has colorful patterns. It can be used as a premium raw material for leather goods such as wallets and gloves. A pair of shoes made from frog skin costs 400 yuan. Frog skin is refined and processed into hide glue, used as an adhesive for decorations such as jewelry and diamonds.

Feed prospects of bullfrog farming: bullfrog by-products (heads, internal organs) are dried and made into mixed feed to feed chickens, which can increase the egg-laying rate.

Insect-catching expert prospects of bullfrog farming: like other frogs, bullfrogs mainly feed on agricultural pests. One bullfrog can prey on more than 10,000 pests a year on average. One tadpole can eat more than 100 mosquito larvae a day at most.

Aerospace use prospects of bullfrog farming: frog oil is used in the aerospace industry.

Bullfrog farming techniques

1. Fry stocking: before stocking, disinfect each mu with 50 to 75 kg of quicklime or 10 to 15 kg of bleaching powder. Fry can be stocked 10 days after pond clearing and disinfection. Before stocking, young frogs are soaked in a 20 mg/L potassium permanganate solution for 10 to 20 minutes. During the young frog stage, 60 to 80 per sq m; during the adult frog stage, 30 to 40 per sq m.

2. Pond inspection: inspect the pond once each in the morning, at noon and in the evening every day to prevent bullfrogs from escaping. Ensure flowing water is uninterrupted for 24 hours, with a daily water exchange rate of 300%. At the drainage outlet, the water level can be controlled by raising and lowering a plastic insert pipe. Generally the pond water depth is 30 to 40 cm. If abnormal feeding or activity is found in the bullfrogs, measures should be taken promptly.

3. Feed feeding: the feed is mainly floating compound feed. Half an hour before feeding, soak the compound feed in water to soften and expand it. The daily feeding amount is 7% to 15% of the total frogs in the pond, and it should be adjusted in good time according to climate, water quality and leftover feed. The feeding amount should be enough to be finished within half an hour. Bullfrog rearing should use graded rearing. At intervals, promptly sort and screen out the larger individuals and move bullfrogs of similar size into the same pond for farming.

4. Disease prevention and control: before stocking fry, clear and disinfect the pond with quicklime or bleaching powder to kill harmful organisms and pathogens, and regularly splash bleaching powder or strong chlorine throughout the pond for disinfection. After dividing into ponds, disinfect the frogs' bodies with a 20 mg/L potassium permanganate solution to prevent mechanical injury. If diseased or dead frogs are found, promptly pick them out and isolate them for rearing, and disinfect in good time with a high-concentration bleaching powder or potassium permanganate solution.

As described above, starting a business always involves certain risks. No project is guaranteed to make a profit without loss, so entrepreneurship requires caution and you should not blindly follow the trend! At present, bullfrog farming has very good prospects, but after all it is a business, and every aspect needs to be thought through thoroughly.
