SummaryRiver shrimp are very easy to keep, as long as you ensure good water quality, suitable water temperature, reasonable feeding, and good disease prevention. River shrimp are omnivorous animals; they dislike sunlight and generally only begin feeding and moving about at night, so keepers should also feed them at night to prevent river shrimp from cannibalizing each other due to a lack of food, which would cause unnecessary losses.

As long as you follow the requirements during the breeding process, raising river shrimp is still quite easy.

1. Filter the water regularly

Even if the water quality for raising river shrimp meets the requirements, you still need to install a filter in the tank and filter the water in the tank regularly. If the water quality is poor and can no longer be used, to avoid the river shrimp dying, you must not change the water immediately; instead, use the “matched water” method to replace it.

2. Water temperature control

River shrimp have high temperature requirements; their bodies are sensitive and cannot withstand high temperatures. As soon as the water temperature exceeds their suitable temperature by even a little, it will cause death. When raising river shrimp, especially when hatching shrimp eggs, be sure to regulate the water temperature to a suitable level to avoid causing the river shrimp to die.

3. Plant aquatic plants

In the tank used for raising river shrimp, you can plant some moss, which is low in price and requires no maintenance. The moss provides river shrimp with a place to cling to and hide, and they can also feed on the microorganisms on the moss to supplement their nutrition.

4. Feed supply

When raising river shrimp, mainly feed plant-based feed such as spinach, and occasionally you can also pair it with some meat-based feed. To ensure balanced nutrition, it is best to also include shrimp food.

5. Keep them separately

When raising river shrimp, it is best to keep only river shrimp in the tank and not mix them with other aquatic pets, so as to avoid the river shrimp being harmed. If you must keep them together, you can only choose lobsters or crayfish of the same size, and you must prepare hidden places for the river shrimp in the tank.

What do river shrimp eat

River shrimp are omnivorous animals; they do not like direct sunlight and generally hide in dark places during the day, waiting until night to come out and forage. According to the living habits of river shrimp, feeding is generally carried out at night. If there is not enough feed, they will even cannibalize each other.

1. At the juvenile stage, they mainly eat plankton.

2. Adult shrimp growing in natural waters mainly feed on small benthic invertebrates in the water, the carcasses of aquatic animals, algae, plant fragments, and so on.

3. Artificially farmed river shrimp generally feed on okara, fish meal, maggots, distillers grains, and other artificial feeds.
