Site and burrow chambers: build a large cement pool and a breeding pool. Daily feed management: feed coarse grains such as corn and paddy rice, add an appropriate amount of daily ration, grass roots and fruit-and-vegetable feed to the feed, and feed once in the morning and once in the evening every day. Hygiene management: clean the breeding pool on average once every three days. Common diseases: promptly prevent and treat trauma, gastroenteritis, colds, heatstroke and other diseases.

Bamboo rats love to eat bamboo; their main feed consists of Miscanthus, bamboo and plant stems, because bamboo rats are rich in nutrients and their meat is delicious, making them very popular among people. They are not only edible but also have certain medicinal value.

1. Rearing environment

Bamboo rats like to live in a dark, quiet, cool and pollution-free environment. They tolerate low temperatures, are timid by nature and afraid of sunlight, so when raising bamboo rats you should choose a place with higher terrain, surrounded by bamboo groves and fruit groves, with good drainage, facing south, with fresh air, far from dense crowds of people and livestock and from places where manure accumulates around, which can effectively prevent infectious diseases in bamboo rats through eating. The living temperature for bamboo rats is -8°C-35°C, and the optimum temperature is 8°C-28°C.

2. Site and burrow chambers

If raising bamboo rats at home, you can do it directly in an empty space at home, or renovate an unused old warehouse or an idle old house. Generally it is required that the light be dim, the ground solid, and the inner walls smooth. If raising bamboo rats on a large scale, you must build different rearing pools according to different uses.

1. Large cement pool

Suitable for weaned young rats and adolescent rats to live together; build a large cement pool with an area of more than 2 sq m, and place many hollow cement pipes and clay jars in the pool so that the bamboo rats have places to hide.

2. Breeding pool

(1) Build two small pools, one inner pool and one outer pool. The inner pool is for sleeping, and the outer pool is for placing feed, doing exercise, etc.

(2) Between the two pools, dig a connecting hole with a diameter of about 12 cm so that the bamboo rats can enter and leave freely.

(3) The sleeping pool should be about 30 cm long and about 25 cm wide. The area must not be too small; if too small it will affect mating of large bamboo rats, and if the area is too large the bamboo rats will not clean up food residues and feces themselves.

(4) The pool used for placing feed is 70 cm long, 40 cm wide and 70 cm high. The bottom of the pool should be smoothed with cement, which can prevent the bamboo rats from digging holes and escaping. The surrounding corners should also be smooth to prevent the bamboo rats from using reaction force to escape.

3. Daily feed management

1. Bamboo rats have a particularly strong digestive capacity and can digest crude fiber and lignin. They can be fed coarse grains, such as corn, paddy rice and sweet potato, which are feeds relatively rich in carbohydrates.

2. Each day, add about 40 grams of 50%-60% daily ration to the feed, while grass roots and bamboo feed should account for about 15% of the daily feed, and the vegetables fed each day should account for about 15%. You can feed carrots, sugarcane, water chestnuts, or use pelleted feed of meat such as chicken, duck and pork.

3. Because bamboo rats do not have the habit of drinking water, their main source of water intake is feed, so to ensure the bamboo rats' required water intake, you need to feed them once in the morning and once in the evening every day.

4. Hygiene management

If the breeding pool is not clean, it will very easily cause disease in bamboo rats, so clean the breeding pool once every three days, clean up some residues thoroughly, and also ensure the hygiene of the bamboo rats' food. When feeding, use a basin to hold it, which makes it easier to clean up spoiled feed and reduces illness in bamboo rats caused by feed.

5. Common diseases

1. Trauma: caused by biting each other while fighting over food or burrow chambers, or by being scratched by the cage during transport of bamboo rats. Iodine tincture can be used to disinfect and prevent reinfection. In severe cases, first squeeze out the pus, wash the wound with anti-inflammatory water, then apply iodine tincture and sprinkle on anti-inflammatory powder, and raise them separately.

2. Gastroenteritis: generally bamboo rats show reduced appetite, diarrhea, listlessness, and damp hair on the abdomen and tail; fecal pellets stick together with pellets. If discovered early, crush 1 tablet of oxytetracycline and mix it with corn or rice for feeding, twice a day, and they can recover after 2-3 days of feeding.

3. Cold: due to weather reasons, bamboo rats will show rapid breathing, clear nasal discharge, and not eating feed or eating little. You can inject 0.5 ml of compound aminopyrine, twice a day.

4. Heatstroke: in high-temperature weather, bamboo rats with heatstroke will show symptoms of rapid breathing and unsteady walking. You can bury the bamboo rat in wet sand with its head exposed, and it will wake up in about 15 minutes.
