Causes and Treatment Methods for a Runny Nose in Pigs
SummaryA pig with a runny nose may be suffering from swine rhinitis or a swine cold. Swine rhinitis: it often occurs in pigs aged 2-5 months, with symptoms of clear nasal discharge, snoring, and difficulty inhaling; the sick pig's body temperature does not rise and its mental state is good, and it can be treated by spraying kanamycin sulfate or streptomycin sulfate into the nostrils, and it can recover after 2 treatments. Swine cold: it occurs frequently in early spring and late autumn, and often occurs in piglets; symptoms include elevated body temperature, runny nose, and a marked drop in appetite, and it can be treated by injecting agents such as Antondin or penicillin.
I. What disease is a runny nose in pigs
1. Swine rhinitis
Pigs aged 2-5 months are usually prone to respiratory diseases such as swine rhinitis, whose symptoms include sneezing, snoring, nasal congestion, and difficulty inhaling; while eating, after a few bites they need to breathe deeply through the mouth, and after eating their fill and after strenuous exercise, the nasal congestion and rapid breathing worsen.
2. Swine cold
A cold can occur in all four seasons, and occurs frequently in early spring and late autumn when the climate is changeable; it often occurs in piglets. This is an acute systemic disease, mainly inflammation of the respiratory mucosa caused by cold stimulation, and its main symptoms are coughing, elevated body temperature, and a runny nose; it is not contagious.
II. Symptoms of a runny nose in pigs
1. Swine rhinitis
In the early stage of illness, pigs have difficulty breathing, sneeze, and have clear nasal discharge; after about 2-4 days it becomes thick or white and foamy, and after 10 days it gradually turns purulent; in some cases, even about a month after becoming ill, the pig still has a runny nose continuously. The sick pig's body temperature does not rise, its appetite does not change much, and its mental state is relatively good.
2. Swine cold
The sick pig's body temperature rises above 40°C, with listlessness, a marked drop in appetite, a tendency to sleep, a lowered head and drooping ears, slightly red mouth color, a white-coated tongue, cold ear tips and limbs, sneezing, coughing, and clear nasal discharge; it is often constipated, and a small number have diarrhea. In severe cases, it basically will not eat, the ocular conjunctiva is pale, and it often lies on the ground and cannot get up.
III. How to treat a runny nose in pigs
1. Treatment of swine rhinitis
(1) Use a syringe to draw about 4-5 milliliters of kanamycin sulfate, remove the needle, and spray it directly into both nostrils of the sick pig, once a day; it can recover after about 2 treatments.
(2) Take 1 vial of 1 million units of streptomycin sulfate and mix it with 5 milliliters of water for injection; after it dissolves, spray it into the nostrils of the sick pig, and about 2 sprays are enough.
(3) Use naristillae medicine and drip it into the nostrils of the sick pig, using 1 vial per day; the specific number of times can be determined according to the condition. To reduce the incidence of rhinitis, after purchasing piglets, about 2-4 milliliters of kanamycin sulfate can be sprayed into both nostrils of the piglets.
2. Treatment of swine cold
(1) Antipyretic and analgesic: based on medication for a pig weighing 50 kilograms, inject about 5-10 milliliters of Antondin, or about 5 milliliters of Bupleurum, 2-3 times a day.
(2) To prevent the condition from spreading: inject 10,000 units of penicillin per kilogram, or intramuscularly inject about 2-10 milliliters of sinomin.
(3) Cough relief: orally take about 0.2 grams of carbetapentane or about 0.3-1 gram of ammonium chloride.
(4) Temperature reduction: intramuscularly inject about 2-5 milliliters of dexamethasone, and inject about 5-10 milliliters of aminopyrine at the Dazhui acupoint.
(5) Constipation: administer paraffin oil or sodium sulfate by drenching; at the same time, promptly protect against rain, moisture, and cold according to climate changes, and keep the pig house dry, warm, and sanitary to prevent drafts from invading.
