The correct injection sites for pigs and the reasons for bleeding after injection
SummaryIntramuscular injection: the injection site is chosen at the well-muscled buttock or neck. Subcutaneous injection: the injection site is chosen at the inner thigh or behind the base of the ear. Intravenous injection: the injection site chosen is the back of the ear or the great auricular vein. Intraperitoneal injection: inject the medicinal solution into the abdominal cavity. The reasons for bleeding after pigs are injected are the occurrence of African swine fever and eperythrozoonosis, or damage from mycotoxins, as well as deficiency of qi and blood.
I. The correct injection sites for pigs
1. Intramuscular injection
Because the muscles are rich in blood vessels, the injected medicinal solution is absorbed very quickly, and at the same time there are relatively few sensory nerves distributed in the muscles, so the pain caused is relatively mild, so intramuscular injection is a relatively commonly used injection method, and the injection site is generally chosen at the well-muscled buttock or neck.
2. Subcutaneous injection
Subcutaneous injection is injecting the medicinal solution into the loose tissue between the skin and the muscles, and the injection site is generally chosen at a site where the skin is thin and easy to move, but where movement is relatively small, such as the inner thigh or behind the base of the ear.
3. Intravenous injection
Intravenous injection is a treatment technique that injects the medicinal solution directly into the blood vessels to prompt the medicinal solution to take effect quickly, and it is mainly used to rescue critically ill pigs. The injection site generally chosen is the back of the ear or the great auricular vein. When performing intravenous injection, it is necessary to first wipe the great auricular vein on the back of the ear with an alcohol cotton ball to prompt the vein to become engorged, and then use a finger to press hard on the vein at the base of the ear to make the blood vessel bulge.
4. Intraperitoneal injection
Intraperitoneal injection is injecting the medicinal solution into the abdominal cavity, thereby achieving the treatment purpose. This method is generally often used for piglets. During injection, it should not be too deep or too far forward, to avoid damaging the internal organs, and it should also not be too far backward, to avoid damaging the bladder.
II. What are the reasons for bleeding after pigs are injected
1. African swine fever
The African swine fever virus attacks the liver. Because the liver stores blood, after the liver is damaged, thin blood and water will appear, and bleeding will occur after injection. The occurrence of African swine fever is accompanied by symptoms of body temperature rising above 41°C, fasting, miscarriage, vomiting blood, and bloody stool.
2. Eperythrozoonosis
Because Eperythrozoon attaches to the red blood cells or plasma of pigs, it easily causes a disease in pigs with symptoms such as icteric anemia, causing thin blood and water, and bleeding will occur after injection. The occurrence of eperythrozoonosis will lead to constipation, a body temperature of 40-41°C, and tea-yellow urine, which in severe cases will be close to red, and bleeding points will appear on the back, which can be wiped off with a towel.
3. Damage from mycotoxins
Mycotoxins mainly attack the five internal organs and six bowels of pigs. When the liver is severely attacked, or has been attacked for a long time, bleeding will occur after injection. Pigs severely damaged by mycotoxins will have rust spots on the back, with normal body temperature and normal feeding, and some will also have bleeding points on the back.
4. Deficiency of qi and blood
When sows are in a state of high load and high consumption of qi and blood for a long time, deficiency of qi and blood is very likely to occur. When deficiency of qi and blood occurs, the liver will be damaged, and at the same time the kidneys will also be damaged, and bleeding will occur after injection. Generally, with deficiency of qi and blood, sows will have problems such as difficult labor, long labor process, cracked hooves, and postpartum constipation.
