Detailed Explanation of Key Pomegranate Bonsai Cultivation Techniques
The pomegranate is a beauty-enhancing fruit, generally available around the Mid-Autumn Festival, and is deeply loved by people for its abundant flesh and sweet taste, so many people grow a pot of it at home. So what are the pomegranate bonsai cultivation techniques?
1. Seed selection
Potted pomegranate trees are generally grown mainly for their flowers or fruit, so cultivars with large, brightly colored flowers, a long flowering period and beautiful fruit shape should be chosen, such as 'Dahua' pomegranate and 'Taishan Hong' pomegranate.
2. Pot selection
For growing pomegranate trees, an earthenware pot is best, because earthenware pots drain and breathe better than other containers, which is more beneficial to the growth of the pomegranate tree. The size of the earthenware pot should be chosen according to the pomegranate seedling to be planted.
3. Soil selection
Potted pomegranate trees require loose, airy soil that retains fertilizer and water. You can buy ready-mixed potting soil at a flower and bird market, or mix your own using 3 parts garden soil and leaf mold, plus 2 parts barnyard manure and fine sand. Remember to sterilize the mixed soil at high temperature for more than half a month before putting it in the pot.
4. Planting
Before spring budding, put the prepared or purchased soil into the pot, but do not fill the pot completely; about 2/3 full is enough. After filling with soil, plant the pomegranate tree with its roots spread out in the soil hole in the pot, and cover the pomegranate seedling well with soil, keeping the soil level with its root crown. After compacting the soil slightly, water it thoroughly; once the water has seeped down and the soil is moist, place the pot in a semi-shaded spot, and no more watering is needed until it sprouts. The bonsai style of the pomegranate tree can be chosen according to personal preference; styles such as the straight-trunk style, slanting-trunk style, grouped planting style and curved-trunk style are all acceptable.
5. Management techniques after planting
(1) Water and fertilizer: After the pomegranate tree is planted, attention must also be paid to care and management. During its growing season, be sure to provide sufficient light, water and fertilizer, and you can apply diluted fertilizer to the pomegranate tree several times. Before all its leaves have fallen, apply a heavy dose of fertilizer once to ensure budding and growth the following year. During the flowering and fruiting period of the pomegranate tree, water once every two or three days; in summer, water in the morning and evening, and in winter, control water and take measures to protect it from the cold.
(2) Pruning and shaping: Potted pomegranate trees should be pruned and thinned in time to ensure the ornamental quality of the pomegranate bonsai. As for timing, you can choose one week after leaf fall in autumn and during the growing season.
