How to Grow Chinese Torreya? A Detailed Guide to Chinese Torreya Cultivation Techniques
Chinese Torreya is a tree species native to China, also known as Chinese Torreya, Torreya tree, Yu Torreya, wild Chinese Torreya seed, and Concubine's tree. It is currently cultivated in southern regions. So what are its cultivation techniques?
Introduction to Chinese Torreya Cultivation Techniques
1. Site selection and land preparation
Choose high-quality fields with soft, breathable soil, rich in organic matter, relatively flat terrain, and fast drainage. Before planting, first dig large pits 50-70 cm square and 35-50 cm deep to loosen the soil, which helps the roots grow deep and absorb nutrients. For base fertilizer, it is best not to apply it and plant immediately; apply sufficient base fertilizer one month in advance, and plant after it has fermented.
2. Planting density
When planting Chinese Torreya seedlings, to allow the seedling roots to spread out, fill the soil while gently pressing it down; when the hole is 70% filled with soil, gently lift the seedling so the root fibers extend naturally in the soil. The initial planting density for afforestation is 33 trees/667 sq m, with a spacing of 4 m × 5 m.
3. Reasonable water and fertilizer
If the land is fertile, no fertilizer is needed in the first year. If fertilizing, it is best to do so in spring and autumn each year. Do not apply chemical fertilizer, and especially do not fertilize in summer. When fertilizing, keep some distance from the seedlings; generally, fertilizing at the outer edge of the tree canopy's coverage is best. In dry weather, water moderately. When summer comes, rainfall gradually increases, and accumulated water must be drained immediately, otherwise large-scale seedling death may occur.
4. Field management
Shaping and pruning: To achieve high and stable yields of Chinese Torreya, tree height and crown width must be controlled. Keep the tree crown height at 4-5 m, maintain a multi-trunk, round-headed crown shape. After the crown shape is established, routine pruning is still needed every year.
Loosening soil and weeding: In winter from December to January, combine with fertilization and deep-turn the soil around the Torreya trees once, bury fallen leaves into the soil, and intercrop crops such as beans and clover in the woodland to improve soil aeration and increase income. In July-August, shallow-turn once, and cut weeds and tender branches to cover the root zone of the Torreya trees, which helps lower temperature, retain moisture, and facilitate harvest.
Pest and disease control: Pay attention to preventing and controlling damage to Chinese Torreya by termites, Chinese Torreya small leaf roller moths, gall mites, rust mites, and others. Spray pesticides in advance for prevention and control.
