Many people have heard Yuan Mei's poem “Moss flowers are as small as rice, yet they also learn from peonies to bloom”, but they have never seen moss flowers bloom, so when do moss flowers bloom?

1. When do moss flowers bloom?

Moss flowers generally refer to the flowers of moss, but moss is a plant that does not bloom. It is the lowest of the higher plants, has no seeds, and reproduces by spores.

So no matter which month it is, moss will not bloom. “Moss flowers are as small as rice, yet they also learn from peonies to bloom” is more likely intended to highlight a spirit that does not lose the courage to grow because of a harsh environment.

2. What is moss?

Moss is a plant that reproduces by spores. There are about 23,000 species of bryophytes worldwide, and about 2,800 or more species in China.

The structure of moss is very simple, containing only two parts, stems and leaves, and sometimes only a flat thallus. It has no true roots or vascular bundles. It likes to grow in sunny and moist environments, generally growing on bare stone walls or in moist forests and swamps.

Moss is not suitable for growing in dark places. It needs a certain amount of diffused light or a semi-shady environment. Most importantly, it likes moist environments and cannot tolerate drought or dryness.

If moss is to be cultivated artificially, a certain amount of light should be provided during care, and water should be sprayed multiple times a day (depending on air humidity), keeping the relative air humidity above 80%.

The temperature must not be lower than 22°C, and it is best kept above 25°C for good growth.

3. What types of moss are there

Bryophytes in China are further divided into 3 orders, 6 families, 21 genera, and 112 species. The 3 orders are Sphagnales, Andreaeales, and Bryales, and the 6 families are Grimmiaceae, Ephemeraceae, Funariaceae, Splachnaceae, Pottiaceae, and Tetraphidaceae.
