Chinese mahogany (Toona sinensis), also known as Chinese mahogany bell, Xianglingzi, Chinese mahogany seed or Chinese mahogany sprout, is an edible ingredient with a rather strong odor. Besides being planted in open fields, it can also be grown in pots. So what are the techniques for growing Chinese mahogany in pots?

What are the techniques for growing potted Chinese mahogany?

1. Preparation

Prepare 60% peat and 40% loose, fertile vegetable garden soil, and add 3kg of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer or 10kg of fully decomposed, deodorized dry chicken manure. Mix the soil and fertilizer evenly, cover with plastic film and compost for about 30d before use. It is best to choose a clay pot that is attractive in shape, fairly sturdy, has fewer drainage holes at the bottom and a larger diameter, or other artistic flower pots, at a low price.

2. Planting

Plant the Chinese mahogany seedling into the hole in the pot, cover with soil, then place it in a spot with diffused light for normal care. You can also buy high-quality Chinese mahogany seeds and sow them for growing.

3. Light

When Chinese mahogany is a small seedling, it must not be exposed to strong light; it needs diffused light. After the seedling grows larger, give it plenty of light. Only with sufficient light can it grow quickly, and the flavor will be even richer!

4. Temperature

Chinese mahogany likes warmth and can generally be grown in areas at 8 to 10 degrees. It also likes moisture. In spring it can be grown outdoors, and in winter it can be kept indoors. Only when the temperature is suitable will it sprout tender buds. When watering Chinese mahogany, be careful not to let water accumulate in the flower pot, so as to avoid black rot.

5. Fertilizing

Chinese mahogany is also a fertilizer-loving plant. Add more humus soil and organic animal manure to the bottom of the flower pot, or mix in a microbial agent fertilizer specially for fruits and vegetables. In the early stage of growth, we mostly use organic nitrogen fertilizer, such as homemade soybean fertilizer or rice-washing water. After fermentation, pour it around the potted Chinese mahogany. Later, we can mainly apply potassium fertilizer, so that more Chinese mahogany sprouts will emerge.

When growing potted Chinese mahogany, be sure not to let water accumulate in the pot, and appropriately increase the frequency of watering in summer, while reducing it in winter.
