Scallion, also known as green onion or shicai, is one of the ingredients commonly used in cooking. It is currently planted more in the north, and Shandong is where it is grown the most. Below is an introduction to the cultivation techniques for Shandong scallions.

What are the Shandong scallion cultivation techniques?

1. Choosing the site and selecting seeds

Choose a plot with good drainage, good aeration and relatively high terrain, then deep plow it and apply base fertilizer. The fertilization timing should be determined by the crop rotation; generally about 40kg of compound fertilizer is required as base fertilizer. Varieties should be selected according to the plot, for example, for plots with heavy rain or continuous cropping, choose varieties tolerant to rain and continuous cropping.

2. Planting time

Scallions can be sown in spring, autumn and winter. For example, raise seedlings in March-April, transplant in May-June, and harvest in October-December; raise seedlings in March-May, transplant in June-July, and harvest from December to the following January; raise seedlings in September-October, transplant in November-December, and harvest from May to July of the following year.

3. Sowing

Open furrows on the prepared ridges and broadcast the selected seeds, then cover with a layer of soil after the seeds are sown. After the scallions emerge, regularly add soil on both sides of the scallions.

4. Fertilization

Scallions have a fairly large demand for fertilizer. Generally, when sufficient base fertilizer has been applied, they still need to be fertilized three times during their growth process; whether to fertilize should still be determined according to the growth situation.

5. Watering and intertillage

Because there is relatively more rain in summer, we still need to do the drainage work first and must not let water accumulate in the field. After rain, intertillage and weeding should also be carried out, because after heavy rain the soil will generally clump. In order for the scallions to grow better, intertillage should be carried out after rain. Scallions do not have a high demand for water. Generally, as long as the soil is kept moist, it is fine, so almost no watering is needed, but it should still be determined according to the weather conditions.

6. Pest and disease control

The main diseases of scallions include purple blotch, downy mildew, viral disease, etc., and the main pests include leafminer, onion thrips, beet armyworm, etc. Growers must take preventive measures in advance.

The cultivation of Shandong scallions is actually much the same as cultivation techniques in other places, differing only due to factors such as climate, soil and terrain. Everyone can make appropriate adjustments accordingly.
