The castor bean is native to Egypt, Ethiopia and India. It thrives in high temperatures, is not tolerant of frost, and adapts strongly to acid and alkaline soils. It is widely cultivated in China. Today we will introduce castor bean cultivation techniques.

I. Site selection and land preparation

The castor bean is highly adaptable and suitable for cultivation in all kinds of soil. It can also be grown in scattered spots along ditches and roadsides, in the gaps in front of and behind houses, and on barren hills and slopes. Before planting, plow the land to mature the soil. When planting castor beans on wasteland, convert the slopes into ring-shaped terraced belts around the hill to conserve soil and water and to make management and harvesting easier.

II. Seed selection

Generally, the seeds that mature earlier in the middle of the main ear or the ears on the primary branches are superior quality seeds. Seed selection methods such as salt selection, grain selection, screening and winnowing can be used. Then, on a sunny day, spread the selected seeds in a thin layer and dry them in the sun for 2-3 days, ready for sowing.

III. Seed treatment

For castor bean seed disinfection, mix the seeds with lime slurry. Two days before sowing, soak the seeds in 45°C warm water for 4 hours, or in 25°C warm water for 24 hours; during this time, add hot water to maintain the water temperature and stir 5 times. After soaking, place the seeds in a 25°C greenhouse to germinate overnight, turning them several times. When you see the seed coat cracking, they are ready for sowing.

IV. Sowing at the right time

When sowing castor bean seeds, place 2-3 seeds per hole, then cover with soil. The sowing density should be reasonably determined according to the characteristics of the variety and local natural conditions. If the humidity is high at sowing time, it is not suitable for sowing; the soil needs to be dried in the sun first before sowing, and after sowing, firm the soil promptly.

The castor bean later spread to Brazil, Thailand, Argentina, the United States and other countries. It is widely distributed in tropical regions around the world or cultivated in countries from the tropics to the warm temperate zone. In China, the type cultivated as an oil crop is an annual herb.
