How to grow daffodils in soil? A detailed guide to the cultivation method
The daffodil is an ornamental flower with white petals and a yellow center. The commonly used growing methods are water culture and soil culture, so what is the cultivation method for soil-grown daffodils?
1. Growth habits of the daffodil
The daffodil is a perennial herbaceous plant of the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). Its bulbs are full of sap and are toxic. Daffodils contain lycorine and multi-flowered daffodil alkaloid; if cattle or sheep accidentally eat the bulbs, symptoms such as spasms, dilated pupils and severe diarrhea appear immediately.
The daffodil is an autumn-planted bulbous greenhouse flower that likes a growing environment with plenty of sunlight. It has strong vitality but is not cold-tolerant.
Daffodils lose their leaves and go dormant in July-August. During dormancy, flower bud differentiation takes place in the growing point of the bulb. They have the physiological characteristics of growing in autumn and winter and going dormant in summer.
Daffodils like light, water and fertilizer, and are suited to warm, humid climatic conditions and fertile sandy soil. In the early stage of growth they like cool conditions, in the middle stage they are slightly cold-tolerant, and in the late stage they like warmth. Therefore they require a climate with no severe cold in winter, no extreme heat in summer, and plenty of rain in spring and autumn.
2. Cultivation method for soil-grown daffodils
1. Soil: choose loose soil rich in humus for planting;
2. Transplanting: peel off the dried bulbs of the daffodil seeds, then put about 3 cm of soil into the growing container, place the daffodil seeds in, and then add 1 cm of soil to cover them;
3. Other management: after transplanting, water thoroughly and keep in a cool place for about 5 days, then move to a sunny place to grow. During the growing period, just give suitable watering and light.
In addition, a suitable temperature must be provided. The suitable planting temperature for daffodils is 4-12°C. If the temperature is too low, frost damage easily occurs; if the temperature is too high and there is insufficient light, the plants easily become leggy and the plants also become thin and weak.
