In which month do chrysanthemums bloom?

The blooming times of chrysanthemums differ depending on the variety, region and cultivation facilities. For example, summer chrysanthemums bloom once each in the 5th and 9th months of the lunar calendar; if grown under protective facilities, they can bloom once each in May and October of the solar calendar. Among autumn chrysanthemums, those blooming in mid-to-late September are medium-sized chrysanthemums, while late chrysanthemums blooming in October-November are large chrysanthemums. Cold chrysanthemums, by contrast, bloom from December to January of the following year.

What varieties of chrysanthemums are there?

With newly bred varieties plus the pre-existing ones, there are now more than 7000 varieties, generally classified according to different characteristics, for example:

1. By flowering period

According to different blooming times, they can be divided into summer chrysanthemums (wujiu chrysanthemums), autumn chrysanthemums and cold chrysanthemums (winter chrysanthemums).

2. By flower diameter

Flowers with a diameter of more than 10 cm are large chrysanthemums, those with a diameter of 6-10 cm are medium chrysanthemums, and those with a diameter of less than 6 cm are small chrysanthemums.

3. By color

A flower of a single color is monochromatic, while a flower with more than two colors is bicolor.

4. By petal shape

Ligulate florets spreading out flat are flat petals; ligulate florets of an intermediate type between flat petals and tubular petals are spoon petals; ligulate florets extending in a tubular shape are tubular petals; ligulate florets with 1-3 whorls of flat, spoon or tubular petals are osmanthus petals; and strangely shaped petals are irregular petals.

5. By leaf shape

There are upright leaves, deeply lobed upright leaves, long leaves, deeply lobed long leaves, round leaves, sunflower leaves, fluffy leaves, reversed leaves and stalk-attached leaves.

6. By cultivation method

According to cultivation method, chrysanthemums can be divided into four major categories: potted chrysanthemums, ground-cover chrysanthemums, cut-flower chrysanthemums and shaped chrysanthemums (artistic chrysanthemums).

Autumn is the peak blooming season for chrysanthemums, and many regions also hold various flower exhibitions, so friends who love chrysanthemums must not miss out.
