Peony is also known as Jiangli, Licao, Lanweichun, Yurong, Lishi, Moguhua, Heiqianyi, Hongyao, and so on, and is cultivated in many parts of our country. Below we introduce the planting methods and management precautions for peony; friends in need can read on.

Introduction to Peony Planting Methods and Management

I. Peony Planting Methods

1. Propagation

Peony can be propagated by division, sowing, cuttings, layering, and other methods. Among these, division is the most commonly used propagation method for peony, and it can be carried out from when the overwintering buds are plump to before the ground freezes. However, the division time differs by region; in Yangzhou, division is done from late September to early November. Peony seeds must be sown promptly in the same year they are collected; for example, in the Heze area, sowing is done from late August to late September. In addition, taking cuttings in mid-July gives the best rooting results.

2. Land Preparation and Fertilization

Choose a sandy loam soil with a deep soil layer, a low groundwater table, good drainage, and a loose, fertile texture. Before planting, apply high-quality organic fertilizer and compound fertilizer as a base fertilizer, then deep plow, harrow fine, and level the soil before planting the propagated peony seedlings. Planting is generally done from late August to September, and earlier is better than later, no later than late October.

3. Planting

The row spacing and plant spacing for planting are 50 cm × 30 cm, with holes 12 cm deep and 20 cm in diameter; first water each hole thoroughly, and after the water seeps down, spread a 4 cm thick layer of decomposed barnyard manure at the bottom of the hole, cover it with 4 cm of soil, compact it, then place the peony buds into the middle of the hole with the bud tips facing up, putting 1 to 2 peony buds in each hole. After planting, mound soil 10 to 15 cm high around each hole. Before overwintering, water thoroughly to protect against freezing.

4. Field Management

Cultivation and weeding should be done 3 to 4 times each year, and thereafter, from plant sprouting until the rows close, weeding should be done 4 to 6 times each year. During summer droughts, cultivate to conserve soil moisture; in winter, combine cultivation with a thorough garden cleanup to reduce pests and diseases. In addition, starting from the second year after planting, topdressing is needed 3 times each year.

II. Peony Management Precautions

1. Site Selection

When planting peonies, it is best to choose a location with relatively high terrain and good drainage. The soil should be loose and fertile, and a sandy soil with a very deep soil layer is best. If planting in an area with relatively high salinity and alkalinity, the soil needs to be replaced; if planting in a relatively low area, a raised platform needs to be built.

2. Watering

The fleshy roots of peony are not very tolerant of waterlogging, so do not water it too much, but it also must not be too dry, as that will adversely affect its growth. Therefore, when watering it, be sure to water thoroughly, and do not water it while it is already moist, so as to avoid water accumulation causing root rot.

3. Fertilizing

Peonies greatly enjoy fertilizer. If the amount of fertilizer is too small, the nutrition will not keep up and its growth will be affected, so do not apply too little fertilizer, but do not apply too much either, because excessive fertilizer can easily cause fertilizer burn. When peonies are blooming, their demand for fertilizer is relatively large, so at this time they should be topdressed.

Peony planting methods and management may look complicated, but in fact, as long as you master them well, they are quite simple. I wonder whether you gained anything after reading this.
