When does lilac normally bloom?
Lilac is an ornamental flower; when it blooms, the flowers are gorgeous and the fragrance spreads all around, and many people like it, so when does lilac bloom?
1. Growth habits of lilac
Lilac is a shrub or small tree of the Oleaceae family and the Syringa genus. Its flowers are generally pale purple, purplish red or blue, and its main distribution areas are Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shandong and other places.
Lilac grows on mountain slopes in thickets, beside mountain streams, along valley roadsides and on beach land by the water, at an altitude of 300-2400 m. It is commonly cultivated in gardens north of the Yangtze River in China. It likes warmth, moisture and full sunshine, and many types also have a certain cold resistance. For bare-root transplanting after leaf fall and before bud break, choose a fertile, well-drained, sunny spot for planting.
Lilac likes light; in shady or semi-shady places it grows weakly and blooms sparsely. It has a certain cold resistance and strong drought resistance, is not strict about soil requirements, tolerates poor soil, and likes fertile, well-drained soil. It should not be planted in low-lying land, as waterlogging can cause disease and even the death of the whole plant.
2. When does lilac bloom?
Lilac generally blooms in April-May each year, but because the climatic conditions vary from place to place, the blooming time also differs somewhat; the actual blooming time should be taken as the standard.
3. What are the propagation methods of lilac?
Lilac has many propagation methods, including sowing, cuttings, grafting, division, layering and so on, among which
1. Sowing
It can be sown indoors in pots or in open-field beds in spring and autumn. In the north, spring sowing is preferable; carry out cold-frame pot sowing in late March, maintaining the temperature at 10-22°C, and seedlings emerge in 14-25 days, with an emergence rate of 40%-90%. If sowing outdoors in spring, it can be done from late March to early April.
2. Cuttings
One month after flowering, select strong semi-lignified shoots of the current year as cuttings; the cuttings are about 15 cm long. Treat them with a 50-100 PPM aqueous solution of indolebutyric acid for 15-18 hours, cover with plastic film after inserting, and they will root after 1 month, with a rooting rate of 80%-90%.
