A Detailed Guide to Guiqi Mango Cultivation Techniques and Management Key Points
Guiqi fragrant mango is a signature mango variety unique to Guangxi, enjoying extremely high fame and reputation locally in Guangxi. Most people with high demands for mango flavor and quality are devoted only to Guiqi mango. So, what are the cultivation techniques for Guiqi mango?
1. Site selection and land preparation
Guiqi mango is suitable for planting on plots with deep soil, good drainage, a not-too-high groundwater table, soil rich in organic matter, strong air permeability, and a pH value of 5.5-7.0. Dig planting holes 2-3 months before field planting; apply decomposed pig manure, cow manure, or farmyard manure and superphosphate to each hole, and mix the fertilizer with topsoil before backfilling the hole.
2. Field planting
Field planting from June to August is preferable, but it should also be determined according to the actual conditions of the soil, region, and variety. Generally, planting can be done from September to October in southwestern and southern areas, and from March to May in non-arid areas. The best time for planting is on a cloudy day or before rain. During planting, make sure the root system is spread out, and the depth should be such that the root crown is level with the soil surface. After planting, water thoroughly to settle the roots and add mulch.
3. Field management
Fertilization: For young trees, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers are the main focus, with an appropriate combination of potassium fertilizer. Start topdressing after 1-2 flushes of new shoots emerge following planting; apply topdressing once each in March, May, July, and September, and in June-August combine green manuring and hole expansion to increase the application of organic fertilizer.
Irrigation: When fertilizing and pruning mango trees after fruit harvest, if high-temperature and droughty weather occurs, appropriate irrigation should be carried out. Irrigate until thoroughly watered, and generally stop irrigation after mid-November. The irrigation method and amount of water should be determined according to the condition of the fruit trees in the orchard. Generally, the method of irrigating through fertilization trenches is used, and the amount of water should be suitable to keep the soil moist.
Pruning: For the shaping and pruning of young trees, start pinching or heading back when the seedlings reach 80-100 cm in height after planting. Cultivate the main trunk and main branches to produce shoots, and pinch the tips of secondary main branches when they extend 60-70 cm.
4. Pest and disease control
During the mango planting process, attention should be paid to preventing and controlling infestations by pests and diseases such as the mango shoot borer, white wax cicada, longhorn beetle, fruit fly, anthracnose, powdery mildew, and gummosis. Spray in advance for control.
Mango is suitable for growing in high-temperature areas, and Guiqi mango is no exception. Its main producing areas are Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian, and other provinces.
