Key Technical Points for Garlic Planting and Field Management
We eat a lot of garlic, and for growers, once experience is accumulated, it becomes second nature. Today let's introduce garlic planting and management to beginners!
1. Garlic Planting and Management
Choose a suitable garlic variety and plant it in loose, fertile soil, spreading base fertilizer before sowing. Garlic needs different amounts of water at different growth stages; during the sowing period, sufficient moisture must be ensured; at other times, simply apply fertilizer reasonably according to the garlic's growth conditions.
2. Field Management
Field management
Topdressing:
(1) Seedling stage: apply 15-20 kg of compound fertilizer per 667 sq m to supplement the base fertilizer.
(2) Flower stalk elongation stage: apply 15-20 kg of compound fertilizer per 667 sq m to ensure sufficient nutrients and promote vigorous growth.
(3) Garlic bulb swelling stage: after harvesting the garlic scapes and before harvesting the garlic bulbs, apply 10-5 kg of special compound fertilizer for garlic per 667 sq m together with irrigation, to ensure rich nutrients that promote bulb swelling.
Watering:
(1) After sowing garlic, keep the soil moisture sufficient but not waterlogged, to ensure uniform emergence.
(2) At the seedling stage, irrigate 1-2 times according to soil conditions, to promote root development, cultivate strong seedlings and enhance the seedlings' cold resistance.
(3) At the flower bud and scale bud differentiation stage, water promptly to promote green-up.
(4) At the garlic scape elongation stage, strengthen fertilizer and water management and water continuously to keep the bed surface from drying out; use water to promote scape and leaf growth. Stop watering 2-3 d before harvesting the garlic scapes to increase their toughness, which facilitates scape harvesting, storage and transport.
(5) At the garlic bulb swelling stage, water after harvesting the garlic scapes and keep the bed surface from drying out; avoid exposure to the sun to prevent sunscald on the bulbs, and stop irrigation 5 d before harvest to promote the accelerated transfer of assimilates from the leaves to the garlic bulbs.
