The Scleranthus succulent is also known as small pine green. Its leaves are fleshy needles and its shape closely resembles a round ball, which is how it got the name Scleranthus. So how do you grow the Scleranthus succulent? Let's take a look below.

1. Pot and soil

For growing Scleranthus, a ceramic pot with drainage holes is sufficient. The potting soil should be loose, well-aerated and well-draining. You can mix garden soil, leaf mold and sandy soil in a 1:2:1 ratio to make the growing medium.

2. Light

The normal growth of Scleranthus depends on sufficient light. If there is not enough light, Scleranthus will grow leggy, the plant shape will not be compact, and its ornamental value will be seriously affected. In spring and autumn it can be placed outdoors to grow, while in summer it only needs scattered light and requires good ventilation, and in winter insulation measures need to be taken.

3. Water and fertilizer

The watering principle for Scleranthus is to keep it dry rather than wet, so generally just water an appropriate amount after the potting soil dries out, and avoid rain exposure and water accumulation in the potting soil, so as to prevent root rot and death of Scleranthus. Scleranthus generally does not need fertilizing; you can apply a top dressing once each in spring and autumn, mainly decomposed dilute liquid fertilizer, and only a small amount is needed.

4. Temperature

The most suitable growing temperature for Scleranthus is 20-28 degrees. If the temperature is too high, for example above 35 degrees, or below 10 degrees, Scleranthus will directly enter dormancy, so watering and fertilizing must be strictly controlled in winter and summer. If the air is dry, you can sprinkle water around the plant to increase air humidity.

5. Pruning

Scleranthus is repotted once a year. When repotting, cut off dead roots, old leaves and some old roots, as this benefits the plant's growth. When the plant grows too tall, pinch off the top, as this promotes the sprouting and growth of side branches.

Growing and caring for Scleranthus is fairly simple. If you like the Scleranthus succulent, you can keep a pot at home to add a touch of green to your home.
