Angelica sinensis, also known as danggui, is a kind of Chinese medicinal herb that has the effects of tonifying qi and blood, regulating menstruation and relieving pain, moistening dryness and lubricating the intestines, and fighting cancer. It is currently being planted in many regions, so what are the cultivation methods and producing areas of Angelica sinensis?

1. What are the cultivation methods of Angelica sinensis?

1. Land selection and soil preparation

Angelica sinensis is suitable for planting at an altitude of about 2500 m, and likes to grow in fertile, loose, well-drained humus soil. Therefore, when selecting land, it is best to choose a shady, cool mid-slope with no direct sunlight, and a place with soft, level soil for planting.

2. Sowing

(1) Seed selection: For Angelica sinensis, harvest its already mature fruits around the Beginning of Summer, let them dry naturally in a cool, dry place, and use them as seeds. Planting is best between late May and early June of the following year.

(2) Sowing method: Evenly scatter the prepared seeds on the soil surface, then cover them with a layer of soil about 5 mm thick. After germination, if weeds grow around them, remove them promptly, preferably by pulling them out directly by hand. When pulling them out, be careful not to damage the new sprouts; if the new sprouts are too crowded, remove the excess new sprouts promptly.

3. Transplanting

(1) Transplanting time: Transplant about 110 days after the seeds are sown on the land.

(2) Transplanting method: The Angelica sinensis seedlings need to be dug out of the ground. When digging up the seedlings, the movements should be gentle so as not to damage their roots. About 90 seedlings can be tied into a bundle and taken back for storage. It is best to store the seedlings in a cool, dry place for about half a month.

(3) Management techniques after transplanting: After about half a month, transplant the Angelica sinensis seedlings to a place at an altitude of about 2500 m for planting, and the soil surface for planting should be level. During planting, control the spacing well; it should not be too dense. The planting depth should not exceed 5 cm. During the growing period, weeding must prevent damage to the roots. The use of herbicides or pesticides is prohibited. During this period, pay attention to soil drought and waterlogging, irrigation and drainage conditions. Apply fertilizer in an appropriate amount. By early June, pull out the relatively weak, unhealthy, and overly dense small seedlings. Prevent them from affecting the normal growth of other seedlings.

4. Harvesting

Angelica sinensis is suitable for harvesting in mid-to-late October.

2. What are the producing areas of Angelica sinensis?

Angelica sinensis is native to western Asia, and is widely cultivated in various countries in Europe and North America. In China, it is widely cultivated in Gansu, Yunnan, Sichuan, Ningxia and other places, growing in cold, high-altitude, rainy mountainous areas. In fact, Angelica sinensis is all cultivated. It is mainly produced in Minxian, Dangchang, Wudu, Zhangxian, Weiyuan, Wenxian and other places in Gansu, and is also produced in Weixi, Deqin, Zhongdian, Lanping and other counties in Yunnan Province, as well as in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei and other provinces. Among them, Minxian and Dangchang in Gansu have high yields and the best quality, and are known as the “Hometown of Chinese Angelica sinensis”.
