When Do Autumn Chrysanthemums Bloom? A Detailed Guide to Their Flowering Period
The autumn chrysanthemum is also known as Juhua, Jiu Hua, Huanghua, and Dinuhua. It comes in a wide variety of forms, with more than a thousand cultivars already developed, and is one of the most common ornamental flowers. So which month does it bloom in? How is it planted?
Which month do autumn chrysanthemums bloom in?
The flowering period of the autumn chrysanthemum is July, and generally the more famous cultivars mostly open around the 9th lunar month (November on the solar calendar). However, because of differences in current cultivation methods, cultivars, and other factors, the opening time of autumn chrysanthemums also varies.
How are autumn chrysanthemums planted?
Autumn chrysanthemums can be planted by means of cuttings, division, grafting, sowing, and tissue culture.
1. Sowing
Autumn chrysanthemums are suitable for sowing in February to April, and after sowing they can bloom in the same year.
2. Grafting
For grafting autumn chrysanthemums, Huanghao (Artemisia annua) or Qinghao (Artemisia carvifolia) can be used as the rootstock. Sow the Artemisia seeds in late autumn, sow them in a greenhouse in winter, or raise seedlings in a hotbed during March; in late April, when the seedlings are 3-4 cm tall, move them into pots or plant them out in the field; in May to June, carry out cleft grafting on sunny days.
3. Division
Division is generally done around Qingming. Dig up the plant, separate it along the natural form of the roots while keeping the roots attached, and plant the divisions separately in pots.
4. Cuttings
Cuttings can be divided into bud cuttings, softwood cuttings, and leaf-bud cuttings. Bud cuttings are carried out in autumn and winter, softwood cuttings are mostly carried out in April to May, and leaf-bud cuttings are generally seldom used, only for propagating rare cultivars.
5. Tissue culture
Tissue culture is best carried out in a culture room, with 8 hours of light per day and a light intensity of 3000-4000 lux. After 1-2 months of culture, seedlings can be induced.
During the cultivation of autumn chrysanthemums, they are easily attacked by diseases such as brown spot, black spot, powdery mildew, brown rust, black rust, and root rot, and by pests such as aphids, red spiders, inchworms, chrysanthemum beetles, and white grubs, so everyone should take preventive measures in advance.
