How to Grow Lilium speciosum? Cultivation Methods and Key Technical Points
Lilium speciosum is distributed in Anhui, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Hunan, Guangxi and other provinces and regions. It grows in shady, damp forests and hillside grass at an altitude of 650-900 m. How is Lilium speciosum cultivated artificially?
1. Site selection and land preparation
Lilium speciosum prefers a warm and humid environment, so it is best to choose sandy loam or humus soil on high ground, facing the sun, with deep soil layers, loose texture and good drainage for planting; after selecting the site, plow the soil deeply, apply 2000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure or compost and 25 kg of superphosphate per mu as base fertilizer, and turn them into the soil.
2. Planting time and method
Lilium speciosum is generally best planted in autumn, in September to October in the south, and slightly earlier in the north. On the prepared bed surface, open horizontal furrows at a row spacing of 25 cm and about 12 cm deep, then place 1 small bulb every 15 cm with the tip pointing upward, cover with fine soil, set them upright and press firmly, rake the bed surface level, and cover with a thin layer of straw.
3. Field management
Cultivation, weeding and fertilizing: in the second year after planting, carry out the first cultivation and weeding in spring after the seedlings emerge evenly, and apply topdressing once, using decomposed human and livestock manure water, superphosphate and compost mixed evenly, applied in furrows, then cover with soil. In May to June when buds appear, promptly remove the flower buds so that nutrients are concentrated on bulb growth, which helps increase yield.
4. Pest control
Aphids often suck the sap of tender stems and leaves in early summer, causing the plants to wither at the top, affecting growth and spreading diseases. Control method: spray with 40% dimethoate 1000-fold solution to kill them.
5. Harvesting and processing
Generally, around the Beginning of Autumn in the second year after planting, when the stems and leaves wither, choose a sunny day to dig them up. Remove soil, stems and fibrous roots; use large bulbs as commercial products and keep small bulbs for seed use.
The bulbs of Lilium speciosum can be used as medicine and are also edible. Its flowers are elegant, delicate and extremely beautiful, making it a relatively good ornamental plant.
