How to grow potted gardenia? Detailed guide to cultivation methods and precautions
The gardenia has a rich fragrance and lovely white blooms, and is loved by many people. Many people have also started growing gardenias in pots at home, so what are the cultivation methods and precautions for potted gardenias?
1. Cultivation methods for gardenia
Gardenia is an important ornamental garden plant in China, mainly distributed across the southern provinces. To grow a gardenia well, you mainly need to pay attention to several aspects such as potting soil, temperature, watering, fertilizing and care, which are briefly introduced here.
1. Potting soil selection. Gardenia prefers fertile, loose, well-drained acidic soil, with a soil pH between 4-6 being most suitable. For the potting soil, mountain soil or leaf mold can be used. In the early stage of planting, the potting soil should be kept moist, and shade should be provided.
2. Temperature requirements. Gardenia prefers a warm environment, with the optimal growing temperature being 16-18 degrees. In the high-temperature summer season, attention should be paid to cooling, and in the low-temperature winter season, warmth should be provided. It is best to place it in a spot with ample light, good ventilation and suitable temperature.
3. Watering method. Generally, water once every 2-3 days in spring and autumn, 1-2 times a day in summer, and once every 5-7 days in winter. Do not allow water to accumulate, as this easily causes root rot.
4. Fertilizing frequency. Gardenia has a moderate demand for nutrients. It is recommended to apply fertilizer once every two weeks during the peak growing season, mainly using superphosphate.
5. Pruning and care. From April to May, remove some branches on the main trunk, but be careful to keep the flower buds. After the flowers fade in June, immediately cut off the branches.
2. Precautions
1. After planting, water promptly to settle the roots, and maintain relatively high air and soil humidity, but do not allow water to accumulate, so as to avoid root rot.
2. Before budding and blooming, fertilizer and water management should be strengthened, following the principle of light and frequent application.
3. Gardenia prefers semi-shade and fears direct strong light, requiring a shade level of about 50%.
4. Gardenia has strong adaptability, and cultivation and management are relatively extensive, making it easy to succeed.
The above are the cultivation methods and precautions for potted gardenias. When growing gardenias, you must remain patient enough and meet the gardenia's environmental requirements. Only in this way can you see the tree covered in white when the gardenia blooms.
