How to grow a European spruce bonsai? Care methods and points to note
The European spruce has a beautiful tree shape; a mature large tree has a spire-shaped crown, dense branches, bright green needles and yellow-green new foliage, making it an elegant garden tree species. So, how do you grow a European spruce bonsai?
1. Potting soil
The European spruce has rather lush branches and leaves, so a larger bonsai pot should be chosen. The potting soil is generally made by mixing mountain soil, nutrient soil and garden soil. When creating the arrangement, first place the Australian pine at the left 1/3 position of the bonsai pot, while the right 2/3 can be complemented with rockery, ornamental stones, water, etc. After placing the Australian pine in the pot, the plant must be held upright, then cover with soil and press the soil firm with your fingers; the soil surface should be 2-3 cm lower than the rim of the pot.
2. Temperature
It has strong tolerance and can withstand low temperatures below -30°C. Except when the summer temperature exceeds 32°C, it can grow normally in all other seasons.
3. Water
From spring to autumn, water more, but avoid waterlogging in the pot. When it is hot and dry, spray water on the potted plant and the nearby ground to lower the temperature and increase humidity. Water promptly; do not wait until the soil dries out before watering. From late autumn onward, gradually reduce watering to strengthen its cold resistance.
4. Fertilizing
During the growing season, apply fertilizer once every 2 weeks, preferably a compound fertilizer containing nitrogen and potassium. Insufficient fertilizer can easily turn the branches and leaves yellow.
5. Pest control
The Australian pine has few pests and diseases, with occasional damage by scale insects and earthworms. The former can be controlled by washing with soapy water or spraying 40% omethoate, while the latter is treated by repotting and changing the soil or applying a 100-fold ferrous sulfate solution.
6. Repotting
Australian pine bonsai is generally repotted once every 2-3 years, carried out in spring when the temperature is about 10°C, choosing fertile, loose, well-drained sandy soil.
The European spruce has strong shade tolerance, is not demanding about climate, has extremely strong vitality and is simple to care for, making it a relatively ideal bonsai plant.
