How to Grow Osmanthus in the North? Practical Care Tips Shared
Osmanthus is a flower with a rich fragrance, and in China it is mainly grown in areas south of the Qinling Mountains and the Huai River. Of course, it can also be grown in the north, but because the temperature is too low, it is not easy to bloom. So, how do you grow osmanthus in the north?
1. Soil
Osmanthus is not very demanding about soil. Apart from alkaline soil, it can generally grow in ordinary soil, but a slightly acidic sandy loam with deep, loose, fertile soil and good drainage is preferable. To grow osmanthus in the north, you can mix 2 parts leaf mold, 3 parts garden soil, 3 parts sandy soil, and 2 parts decomposed cake fertilizer to make a nutrient soil.
2. Temperature
Osmanthus likes a warm environment and is relatively cold-tolerant, but it cannot stay in a low-temperature environment for a long time. In the northern winter, the climate is cold and the temperature is also very low. For osmanthus to survive the winter safely, it must be kept in an environment at 0-5 degrees. Osmanthus can be moved indoors, especially into a heated room.
3. Light
When growing osmanthus in the north, place it in a spot with plenty of sunlight and let it receive direct sunlight fully. If it is a hot summer, provide appropriate shade at noon; if it is winter, place it in a sunny spot indoors.
4. Watering
Osmanthus likes a moist environment, but it cannot have waterlogging. When growing osmanthus in the north, water it in time and also spray water on the leaves frequently. But in winter, water less, do not let the soil become too moist, and do not let water droplets remain on the leaf surface, in case the droplets freeze into ice.
5. Fertilizing
If you want osmanthus to bloom, fertilizer is indispensable. In spring and autumn, fertilize osmanthus more; apply nitrogen fertilizer during flower bud differentiation, and apply a complete fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium when the flower buds form. In winter, apply decomposed organic fertilizer once before winter begins, and spray an appropriate amount of water, which can prevent the roots from freezing injury.
