How to Grow a Rainbow Dracaena? A Complete Guide to Its Care Methods
The rainbow dracaena (Dracaena marginata 'Tricolor') is a small tree, usually grown as a potted ornamental. Its leaves are very attractive because they are colorful, looking truly vivid and brilliant, a riot of color. So, what are the care methods for the rainbow dracaena?
1. Soil
The rainbow dracaena has a well-developed root system that is white and tender, with many branch roots and very few fibrous roots, and its roots have a relatively poor ability to absorb fertilizer and water. Therefore, it is best to grow the rainbow dracaena in soil with strong permeability and aeration, such as peat soil, loose mountain soil, or peat moss.
2. Temperature
The rainbow dracaena likes a warm environment, with a suitable growing temperature between 20-35°C. In winter, the temperature must not drop below 10°C, otherwise insulation measures must be taken. Because outdoor temperatures in the south are relatively high and northern interiors have heating, the rainbow dracaena can overwinter safely. But winters in the central regions of our country are not so warm, and you may need to cover the rainbow dracaena with a double layer of plastic film and place it inside a south-facing window indoors. When the temperature rises above 10°C, you can open it at noon and cover it again in the morning and evening; when the temperature rises to around 15°C, you can remove the plastic film entirely.
3. Light
The rainbow dracaena likes an environment with ample light, and it can usually be placed in a bright spot indoors. In spring, autumn and winter it can receive direct sunlight, but in summer the light is too strong, so it must not receive direct sunlight.
4. Watering
The rainbow dracaena likes a humid environment. In summer and autumn, spray the leaves frequently with fine droplets of soft water (acidic water and rainwater are best) to keep the relative air humidity at around 80%. But its roots are fine and white and tender, so the potting soil should be neither dry nor wet; when watering, wait until the potting soil is completely dry before watering, and water until the moisture level is moderate. Do not let water accumulate or become too wet.
5. Fertilizing
When fertilizing the rainbow dracaena, apply light fertilizer frequently. When the temperature rises above 20°C, fertilize once a week, mainly with nitrogen, and you can also apply some imported compound fertilizer. Never apply raw fertilizer or concentrated fertilizer, and do not let fertilizer get on the leaves, so as to avoid damaging the leaves.
