What trees can jujube trees be grafted with? When to graft?
Grafting is one of the most common methods of propagating many fruit trees, and it can effectively increase yield and quality, and make them bear fruit faster. So do you know what trees jujube trees can be grafted with? When to graft?
What trees can jujube trees be grafted with?
Jujube trees can be grafted with different varieties of jujube trees such as Zhanhua winter jujube, pear jujube and wild jujube, and can also be grafted with Chinese copper coin tree (Paliurus hemsleyanus) and persimmon trees.
Among them, using wild jujube as the rootstock is best; the wild jujube tree has strong compatibility with the jujube tree, the scion after grafting has a high sprouting rate, enhances its resistance to the environment, and can improve the quality and yield of the jujubes.
When should jujube trees be grafted?
Jujube trees can be bud-grafted in autumn in August-September; bud grafting generally uses two grafting methods: without xylem and with xylem. Grafting without xylem can be done in August, while bud grafting with xylem is best done in September. In addition, multi-head top grafting for variety replacement can, through top grafting of jujube trees for variety replacement, also convert old jujube varieties into jujube trees of superior varieties.
However, whether it is the grafting of jujube trees or the grafting of other fruit trees, only when the two fruit trees have relatively strong compatibility is it easy to survive after grafting, and only after surviving will the trees grow and develop better. In general, the higher the similarity between the two trees and the closer their relationship, the stronger the compatibility between them. If trees of different genera are grafted, it is very difficult for them to survive, and even if survival is possible, the grafting is meaningless.
What are the grafting methods for jujube trees?
1. According to the climate temperature, after it sends out new shoots, select vigorous buds as scions, use the cleft grafting method at about 20 cm, split open the top of the branch on the tree, insert the moved new bud into it, and wrap it well with hemp twine.
2. Cleft grafting is a type of branch grafting, also called large grafting; the grafting time can be earlier than bark grafting, and it is carried out when the bark is not yet easy to peel but the sap has begun to flow. It can be used for grafting seedlings in nurseries or for changing the grafting of large trees.
3. Side grafting is also a type of branch grafting, and the suitable grafting time is the same as cleft grafting. When grafting, cut off the rootstock, make an oblique cut along the rootstock cross-section, with a depth exceeding half the diameter of the rootstock but not exceeding 2/3, otherwise it is prone to wind breakage, forming an oblique incision reaching deep into the xylem. When grafting, insert the prepared scion into the oblique cut of the rootstock, with the long cut surface facing inward and the short cut surface facing outward, so that the cambium of the scion and the cortex of the rootstock align; the other procedures and requirements are the same as cleft grafting.
Although jujube grafting has a high survival rate and low difficulty, only by choosing the right grafting tree and grafting time can you get twice the result with half the effort, so everyone must remember this well.
