Jingui (Osmanthus fragrans 'Jingui') is a plant belonging to the Oleaceae family, and it has another name, Osmanthus. It is a type of August osmanthus, widely distributed in subtropical regions. In China, it mainly grows in the Yangtze River basin and areas to the south. So today, the editor will take everyone to learn about how to propagate Jingui. Let's take a look~

Seed propagation method

Osmanthus seeds can be sown in spring or autumn. Before sowing, the ground should be prepared and base fertilizer applied. When sowing, place the seed with the hilum facing sideways, so as to prevent the radicle and young stem of the seed from bending, which would affect the growth of the seedlings in the future. After sowing, cover the surface of the seeds with a layer of fine sand, then cover with a straw mat, taking care to provide shade and keep moist, and frequently maintain soil moisture. Seedlings can emerge in the same year.

Grafting propagation method

Select robust one-year-old side branches from a 20-year-old plant, choose second-year buds for cutting, use privet (Ligustrum) as rootstock for grafting, cut a suitably sized piece of plastic film to wrap it, and new shoots can sprout in the same season. It generally takes about 4 years to flower. This method of propagation is not suitable for landscaping trees, because the main trunk of the plant does not grow straight.

Cutting propagation method

Generally, cuttings are taken in February. About 30 days before cutting, spray an appropriate amount of trichlorfon on the cutting bed to eliminate nematodes in the substrate; after 15-20 days, disinfect with lime water; and 3 days before cutting, rinse the cutting bed with water. After cutting, firm the bed soil, cover between each row with grass, water thoroughly, and also build a shade frame. New shoots that grow taller than 6 cm can be transplanted.

Layering propagation method

In spring or early summer, select a relatively thick, low-trunk mother tree, and from the lower 1 to 2-year-old branches, choose a part that bends easily, make a ring cut with a sharp blade reaching the woody part of the branch, then press it into soil 3 to 5 cm deep, fix the branch in place, leaving only the branch tip and leaves exposed outside. Take care to keep the substrate moist. Wait until the branch has developed roots in autumn, then it can be cut away from the mother plant for transplanting and care.
