Is the hackberry tree a deciduous tree or an evergreen tree?
The hackberry tree is also known as Huangguo hackberry, white hemp seed, hackberry, hackberry elm, hackberry sapling tree, and sand hackberry, and mostly grows at altitudes of 100-1500 m along roadsides, hillsides, and forest edges. So is it a deciduous tree or an evergreen tree? How is it planted?
1. Is the hackberry tree a deciduous tree or an evergreen tree?
The hackberry tree is a deciduous tree, reaching up to 20 m tall. Its bark is smooth and gray. It blooms from April to May each year and bears fruit from September to November. The mature fruit is nearly spherical, 4-5 mm in diameter, and red-brown when ripe.
2. How is the hackberry tree planted?
1. Site selection and land preparation
The hackberry tree is not very demanding about soil. Except for low-lying waterlogged land, where it cannot be planted, it can be grown in any other soil. Before planting, it is best to choose loose, fertile soil with good drainage. Then deep plow the plot and apply base fertilizer. After applying the fertilizer, plow once more and rake once to mix the soil and fertilizer evenly.
2. Sowing and raising seedlings
Hackberry trees are usually propagated mainly by sowing. The seeds of the hackberry tree generally mature in September. After harvesting, the seeds should be rubbed clean, dried in the shade, and stored in sand. In March-April of the following year, they are grown in separate beds. Before sowing, water the seedbed thoroughly, then wash the previously stored seeds and bury them in the soil. Sowing should not be too deep; 1.5-2 cm is suitable. After the hackberry seedlings emerge, remove the plastic film and carry out management measures such as thinning, weeding, and fertilizing the seedlings. During the cultivation period, pay attention to shaping and pruning the hackberry seedlings so that the trunk is straight and the crown is even and attractive.
3. Potting and planting
Generally, a purple clay ceramic pot or glazed ceramic pot is used. Mix garden soil with sandy soil or rice husk ash to prepare the growing medium and put it into the pot. Then plant after autumn or before the hackberry tree buds in spring.
4. Daily management
Management of the hackberry tree mainly includes care management and shaping management. Spray the hackberry tree with water once each morning and evening, and usually place it in a spot with good ventilation and plenty of sunlight.
