How Does Notoginseng Propagate? A Detailed Explanation of Notoginseng Propagation Methods
Notoginseng, also known as ginseng notoginseng, Panax notoginseng, and Wenzhou notoginseng, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb mainly produced in Wenshan, Yunnan. So how does it propagate? What are its growing conditions?
1. How does notoginseng propagate?
Notoginseng can be propagated by cuttings and sowing, mainly by sowing. In October-November, select mature, plump seeds produced by 3-4 year old notoginseng plants and sow them immediately after harvesting, with a row spacing of 3×2 cun or 3×3 cun. After sowing, cover with a layer of soil mixed with fertilizer, then cover with a layer of turf on top to promote seed germination. After one year, they can basically be transplanted.
2. What are the growing conditions for notoginseng?
1. Soil
Choose a plot of land that is relatively high in elevation, close to a water source, with loose soil texture, not prone to clumping, with good drainage, and with a slight slope. In notoginseng production, soil use must balance use and nourishment; apply fertilizer reasonably according to the local soil texture and fertility characteristics. Through proper cultivation methods, coordinate the water, fertilizer, air, and heat conditions in the soil, create suitable living conditions for microorganisms, accelerate organic matter mineralization, promote nutrient increase, gradually improve soil structure, increase soil fertility, and prevent soil deterioration.
2. Temperature
When notoginseng seedlings break through the soil, the temperature should be controlled at around 22 degrees, and the soil temperature should be maintained at 12 degrees. If the temperature is below zero degrees, it will cause frost damage to the seedlings. Then during the growth period of notoginseng, the temperature should be maintained at 24 degrees, and the soil temperature should be controlled at around 18 degrees.
3. Water
The growth and development period of notoginseng requires a relatively moist environment. Normal plant growth requires maintaining 25-40% soil moisture and requires the relative humidity in the notoginseng garden to reach 70-80%. During the rainy season, since more than 80% of the annual precipitation is concentrated from May to October, the garden can rely on atmospheric precipitation during this period. In years or regions with relatively high annual precipitation, flood prevention and drainage should be carried out after heavy rain or torrential rain, and accumulated water in the garden should be drained promptly.
4. Light
Notoginseng is a typical shade plant. In the early stage of seedling growth, the shade density should be appropriately increased, and the light transmittance inside the shed should be about 25-30%. After entering the rainy season, the number of sunshine hours decreases compared with spring, and the total radiation is also relatively low, while notoginseng is entering its vigorous growth period. At this time, shade should be reduced and the light inside the garden should be increased, with light transmittance able to increase to 40%. The specific amount of shade density in the garden should be controlled according to the actual local conditions at the time.
The propagation and cultivation of notoginseng both require a certain level of technical support, so friends who have the idea of growing it need to master the techniques first.
