Is red maple an evergreen or a deciduous plant?
Red maple is a very attractive ornamental plant; its leaves are red in spring and autumn, and purplish-red in summer, very beautiful. So is red maple an evergreen or a deciduous plant?
1. Is red maple evergreen or deciduous?
Red maple is a deciduous small tree, found in Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan, Jiangxi, Shanghai and other places in China. During the plant's growing season, its leaves are fresh and tender green. When autumn arrives and temperatures drop, the leaves turn yellow and then further change to red, hence the name red maple.
2. The growing environment of red maple
A tropical tree species. It likes humid, warm climates and cool environments, is relatively shade-tolerant and cold-tolerant, and avoids scorching sun, but can grow in full sunlight in spring and autumn. It is not demanding about soil and is suitable for growing in fertile, humus-rich acidic or neutral sandy loam, and is not tolerant of waterlogging.
Red maple likes warm, humid, cool climates; it likes light but fears scorching sun, and is a neutral-to-shade tree species. In summer, dry hot winds can cause the leaf edges to wither and curl, and high temperatures and sunscald can also damage the bark. Although red maple likes warmth, it is still relatively cold-tolerant. In the Yellow River basin area, where winter temperatures drop as low as -20 degrees C, it can still overwinter outdoors as long as the environment is good. As for areas north of the Yellow River, it is better to grow it in pots and move it indoors in winter.
3. The landscaping role of red maple
With the vigorous development of urban landscaping, colorful-leaf plants are being used more and more widely in urban greening, such as purple-leaf plum, ginkgo, purple-leaf barberry, golden-leaf privet and so on. It is predicted that colorful-leaf nursery stock should account for more than 60% of the total landscaping nursery stock, and the domestic landscaping market has also rapidly shifted from “greening” to “colorization, beautification, fragrance and purification&rdquo. Red maple has many varieties, and the leaf color in autumn also differs, such as deep red, light red, yellow-red and so on. At present, scientists have improved on the American red maple and have already bred many improved new varieties, such as: American red maple, North American red maple, American improved red maple (autumn blaze maple, sunset red, October glory) and so on.
Red maple is very beautiful, with leaves as red as fire, and is loved by many people, even becoming a distinctive scenery in many scenic areas.
