Plant pests are a problem often encountered during the planting process. When the pest infestation is severe, it can cause serious damage to plants, and even result in total crop failure in the end. So what are stem-boring worms? When plants suffer from a stem-boring worm infestation, what pesticide is good for treatment?

1. What are stem-boring worms

Stem-boring worms are also called fruit-boring worms. There are many kinds of stem-boring worms, including longhorn beetle larvae, moth larvae and the larvae of other insects. They generally bore into the branches and twigs and gnaw on the wood to cause damage. For fruit trees affected by them, in mild cases growth is poor and the tree vigor weakens and turns yellow, while in severe cases the entire tree may even die. Fruit trees can be affected from the young fruit stage to the mature stage, and they are an important pest of fruit trees. The mature larvae overwinter under the bark of branches and trunks, and in the following spring pupate and emerge as adults.

2. How to control stem-boring worms

The control of stem-boring worms generally involves two methods: manual control and chemical control. Manual control generally means promptly picking off infested fruit, collecting fallen rotten fruit on the ground, and disposing of them centrally. When damaged parts of branches or trunks are found, promptly scrape off the pests, and apply 30% copper oxychloride suspension or 50% carbendazim 50--100 times solution to the wound to prevent infection by pathogens. Another manual control method is trapping and killing. By using the phototaxis of the adults, use black light lamps to trap and kill them during the adult emergence period. Use a sugar-vinegar bait to trap and kill adults. Mix 1 kg of brown sugar, 2 kg of rice vinegar, 10--20 kg of water, and a few drops of formalin into a sugar-vinegar solution and place it in the orchard.

In addition, there is chemical control. Generally, in the early stage of larval hatching, spray fenvalerate or deltamethrin 4000--5000 times solution, or after the first crop of flowers blooms, spray as early as possible 25% dimehypo aqueous solution 600--800 times solution, 90% trichlorfon crystal 800 times solution, or 40% isocarbophos emulsifiable concentrate 1000 times solution for treatment; or use a needle hole to inject insecticides such as dichlorvos or dimethoate, and seal the hole opening with clay, so the borers can be poisoned to death.

The above are some basic measures for the control of stem-boring worms. When carrying out chemical control, relevant safety measures must be taken to prevent pesticide poisoning.
