Wakame sprouts are not wakame. Wakame sprouts are a highly nutritious marine vegetable that grows in the ocean, with the finest quality produced off the east coast of Iwate Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture and in Hokkaido, Japan. In South Korea it is a very common food, and wakame sprout soup is a must on the table at birthdays, during postpartum confinement, and at family gatherings. Wakame is a type of seaweed with skirt-like ribbons along its edges, with edges that split in a feather-like pattern, and it grows very well in seawater with warm currents.
