Kohlrabi is very common in our country. It is rich in nutrients and contains high-quality protein, cellulose, minerals, vitamins, and so on. Eating purple cabbage can supplement nutrition and strengthen the body. So is kohlrabi the same as cabbage?

1. Is kohlrabi the same as cabbage

Kohlrabi is cabbage. Cabbage is commonly known as “kohlrabi” in Northeast China and as “lotus white” in Yunnan. It is cultivated throughout China as a vegetable and feed. It is one of China's important vegetables.

2. Propagation methods of kohlrabi

1. Seed treatment: To prevent the seeds from carrying pathogens, soak the seeds in carbendazim for 24 hours before sowing to disinfect them.

2. Disinfection of the seedbed soil: 20 days before sowing, pour 50 milliliters of formalin mixed with 3 kilograms of water onto the nutrient soil, then cover with film and pile it for about 5 days. You can also mix 50% carbendazim wettable powder into the nutrient soil to disinfect and sterilize the soil.

3. Cultivating strong seedlings: Starting in mid-December, use small arch sheds and seedling trays to raise seedlings. Prevent raising seedlings too early, because a long seedling age makes bolting more likely.

4. Seedbed management: Generally, seedlings emerge 5 days after sowing. Check the seedbed every day. When the temperature is high, pay attention to ventilation to prevent burning the seedlings; when the temperature is low, cover the film well to prevent the seedlings from freezing. Replenish water once a week. When the seedlings grow to 2 leaves and 1 heart, thin them to prevent excessive growth and ensure the seedlings are uniform in size. When the seedling stems reach more than 0.5 cm in diameter, try to keep the temperature above 15°C to avoid passing through the vernalization stage. Stop ventilation 7 days before transplanting to harden the seedlings. When the seedlings grow to 5-6 true leaves, they can be transplanted.

3. Growth habits of kohlrabi

Kohlrabi likes mild, humid conditions and sufficient light. It is relatively cold-tolerant and also has the ability to adapt to high temperatures. The suitable growth temperature is 15-20°C. It is not strict about soil requirements, but it is suitable for planting in humus-rich clay loam or sandy loam. The seedlings of kohlrabi must pass through vernalization at 0-10°C, and then bolt, flower, and set fruit under long-day conditions and suitable temperatures.

Kohlrabi is rich in methionine, which is commonly found in green plants such as lettuce and alfalfa sprouts. This component may help heal peptic ulcers.
