In recent years, A-choy has become very popular in the market, and its appearance is very similar to celtuce leaves, so many people mistakenly think that celtuce leaves are A-choy. So, are celtuce leaves the same as A-choy?

1. Are celtuce leaves the same as A-choy?

Celtuce leaves and A-choy are not the same thing. A-choy leaves are slender, flat and spreading, with a thin, short fleshy stem. In terms of genetic relationship, A-choy belongs to a variety of leaf lettuce——romaine lettuce, which is similar to the familiar lettuce, so it is also called ox-tongue lettuce.

2. The differences between A-choy and celtuce leaves

1. In terms of appearance, A-choy and celtuce leaves are still quite different. A-choy leaves are relatively slender and their surface is relatively smooth, while celtuce leaves are broader and larger, and their surface also has many veins protruding, making them rather uneven, and celtuce leaves are not as long as A-choy.

2. Although A-choy and celtuce leaves are both plants of the genus Lactuca, A-choy is a variety of leaf lettuce—romaine lettuce, and its nutritional value is higher than that of stem lettuce; while celtuce leaves are the leaves of stem lettuce, so celtuce leaves are only one component of stem lettuce.

3. A-choy has a relatively delicate and crisp texture when eaten, while celtuce leaves are not as refreshing to eat and may be a little astringent, with a taste not as good as A-choy.

4. A-choy and celtuce leaves also differ in nutritional value. A-choy contains relatively more dietary fiber and vitamins, and has a good effect on lubricating the intestines, promoting bowel movements, and nourishing the skin; while celtuce leaves contain a large amount of carotene, which is very helpful for relieving eye fatigue and preventing night blindness.

Although A-choy and celtuce leaves look relatively similar, they are not the same plant, and I hope everyone can tell them apart.
