Garlic is a condiment we often use when cooking food. It is rich in protein, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides and many other substances beneficial to the human body. In the north, no matter what you eat, you can have two cloves of garlic to harmonize the flavor. So when diseases appear during garlic cultivation, how should they be treated?

I. Treatment of garlic diseases

The main diseases of garlic include leaf blight, white rot, and rust. During cultivation, the specific disease type should be determined according to the symptoms appearing on the garlic, and the appropriate treatment should be applied.

Garlic leaf blight is one of the common diseases on garlic. In the early stage of the disease, small flower-white round spots appear, which later expand into irregular or oval gray-white or gray-brown lesions, with black moldy growth on the upper part and many scattered small black particles. When the damage is severe, the whole plant does not bolt. The main control methods are to use 50% carbendazim wettable powder for seed dressing and seed soaking before sowing; when the rate of diseased upper leaves on garlic plants reaches 5%, use 70% chlorothalonil wettable powder diluted 500-600 times for spraying, once every 7-10d, for 2-3 consecutive applications.

Garlic white rot mainly damages leaves, leaf sheaths and bulbs. At the initial stage of infection, the outer leaf tips become striped or turn yellow downward from the tip, then spread to the leaf sheath and inner leaves. The plant grows weakly, or the whole plant becomes yellow and stunted or dies. Pulling out a diseased plant, water-soaked lesions can be seen on the bulb epidermis, with a large amount of white mycelial layer growing. The main control method is, in the early stage of the disease, to use 50% carbendazim wettable powder diluted 500 times for spraying, once every 10d, for 2 consecutive applications.

Garlic rust mainly infects leaves and false stems. The diseased parts first appear as spindle-shaped chlorotic spots. When the disease is severe, it often causes blister-like spots to cover the leaves densely, directly affecting the yield and quality of garlic leaves. The main control method is, in the early stage of the disease, to use 15% triadimefon wettable powder diluted 500 times for spraying, once every 10-15d, for 2-3 consecutive applications.

II. Garlic cultivation techniques

1. Before sowing, choose varieties with large heads and few cloves, weak bolting ability, a long dormancy period, and garlic heads weighing more than 50g, and sow in late September and early October each year.

2. Choose loose soil, dry and flat terrain, convenient drainage and irrigation, rich in organic matter, fertile sandy loam plots with strong fertilizer and water retention capacity for cultivation.

3. When fertilizing, first apply sufficient base fertilizer. Generally, apply fully decomposed high-quality organic fertilizer plus urea plus phosphate fertilizer and potassium fertilizer, but avoid excessive dosage to prevent inhibiting seedling growth. In the later stage, reasonable topdressing should also be carried out according to the growth of the garlic.

4. After garlic sowing, keep the soil moisture sufficient without water accumulation. During the seedling stage, irrigate 1-2 times according to the soil quality. During the garlic bolt elongation stage, strengthen fertilizer and water management, preferably watering continuously.

That is all about garlic disease control and basic cultivation techniques. When carrying out large-scale garlic cultivation, be sure to patrol the field more often to check whether the garlic shows any abnormal conditions, so that timely treatment can be carried out.
