The Guzmania blooms only once in its lifetime and gradually dies after flowering. No one wants their beloved plant at home to die just like that! So you need to learn the propagation methods for Guzmania, continuously cultivating new plants so the blooms keep coming. So how do you propagate a Guzmania?

How do you propagate a Guzmania?

For home propagation of Guzmania and other bromeliads, after the flowering period cut off the flower stalk to let new shoots sprout again from the base. Generally, three to five shoots will appear around each plant. Let the lower tiller shoots grow three or four leaves, then detach them from the mother plant and replant them in a pot to achieve propagation.

Division propagation:

Separating the shoots

After cutting off the flower stalk, the Guzmania will continue to grow. When the new shoots reach about 10 cm, use a knife to separate the new shoots from the mother plant. Be careful not to damage the new shoots. The mother plant can then be discarded, and you can focus on caring for the new shoots.

Changing the soil

Do not use the old potting soil to grow the new Guzmania shoots, firstly because the nutrients have mostly been depleted, and secondly because the new shoots need loose, airy, nutrient-rich soil to grow, ideally leaf mold. Then repeat the previous plant care steps, and after a year they can continue to bloom.

Seed propagation:

When the temperature starts to rise in the morning, scatter the seeds on the soil and keep the temperature between 25 and 30°C. After about 25 days, seedlings will emerge.
