Is Huanghuali an evergreen or deciduous tree? Read this to find out
Huanghuali, whose Chinese scientific name is Dalbergia odorifera, also known as Hainan rosewood, Hainan huanghuali, and huanghuali. It is currently a national second-class protected plant. So, is huanghuali an evergreen or deciduous tree?
1. Is huanghuali an evergreen or deciduous tree
Huanghuali is a deciduous tree, with a height of 10-25 m, a maximum diameter at breast height of more than 60 cm, a broad umbrella-shaped crown, relatively low branching, many branches, and thick lateral branches. The bark is brown or light brown, rough, with longitudinal fissured grooves. Except for the young tender parts, inflorescences, and ovary being slightly covered with short soft hairs, the whole plant is hairless.
2. Growing environment of huanghuali
1. Temperature and precipitation conditions
The distribution area has high temperatures year-round, with an annual average temperature of 23-25°C and an extreme minimum temperature of 6.6°C. Rainfall is very unevenly distributed, with precipitation of about 1500 mm during the rainy season (November to April of the following year), and there are many rainstorms.
2. Soil requirements
The soil is brown lateritic soil and red lateritic soil.
3. Terrain and topographic conditions
This species is not strict about site conditions and can adapt and grow on steep slopes, mountain ridges, exposed rock, and arid, barren land. It is a heliophilous tree species; in overly shady dense forests, young trees grow weakly; in stands with lower canopy density, it can grow into a tall tree with a straight trunk. Although it produces abundant seeds, natural sowing occurs during the dry season, so there are not many young trees under the forest.
