Southern Magnolia generally refers to Magnolia grandiflora, also known as Southern Magnolia, bull bay, laurel magnolia, and lotus magnolia. It is cultivated in cities south of the Yangtze River basin in China. So is it deciduous or evergreen? How much does one tree cost?

1. Is Southern Magnolia a deciduous or evergreen tree species?

Southern Magnolia is an evergreen tree, and in its place of origin it can grow up to 30 m tall. Southern Magnolia usually blooms in May-June, with white, fragrant flowers.

2. How much does one Southern Magnolia cost?

Depending on the region, specifications and purchase quantity, the price of Southern Magnolia varies. For example:

1. Pukou District, Nanjing, Jiangsu

A high-quality Southern Magnolia with a soil ball diameter of 50 cm costs 100 yuan/tree;

2. Suqian City, Jiangsu Province

Southern Magnolia with a plant height of 1-1.5 m, a diameter at breast height of 1-15 cm, and a trunk height of 1-2 m costs 5 yuan/tree, with a minimum order of 100 trees;

3. Chuzhou City, Anhui Province

Southern Magnolia with a width of 13 cm costs 450 yuan/tree, with a minimum order of 5 trees.

3. How do you plant Southern Magnolia?

1. Seed and site selection

Choose saplings with well-developed roots and no diseased branches or withered leaves as planting stock. Choose a location with relatively soft soil and relatively suitable light as the planting site. Then, on it, dig planting holes about 1 m in diameter and 50-80 cm deep, at a spacing of about 2 m.

2. Planting at the right time

Lightly prune the selected saplings, remove the dried branches and leaves on them, and treat the cut openings with a disinfectant. Then plant them together with the soil ball at the bottom into the newly dug planting hole, fill in soil and compact it, then water once with settling water. For transplanting large Southern Magnolia trees, early spring is suitable, but the plum rain season is best. When transplanting, note that it is best to choose an overcast or cloudy day, and try to avoid heavy rain or high-temperature weather.

3. Watering

Southern Magnolia loses water very easily, so during digging, transport and planting it must be done quickly and promptly, to avoid excessive water loss that affects survival. After transplanting Southern Magnolia, the first settling water should be given promptly, and it should be watered sufficiently and thoroughly, so that the root system can fully contact the soil and help the large tree survive. If there is too much rainfall after transplanting, drainage channels should also be opened to avoid water accumulating at the roots, which can cause root rot and death of Magnolia grandiflora.
